avast! has given a warning on this several times: "File: system32\drivers\volsnap.sys Rootkit: Win32:Alureon-PS" and recommends that I remove it and every time I've clicked remove. Afterwards when I scan it with avast! and Malwarebytes they find the file clean.

After the fix on OTL the filetype's became visible after the filenames (textfile.txt, magazine.pdf etc.) though I had chosen to hid them, although I doubt this is relevant.

And in case it matters, here's the other kind of warning avast! has been giving me:

Download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
 
 

• Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application
  
  
  
• Then click on Change parameters.
   
  
   
  
• Check the boxes beside Verify Driver Digital Signature and Detect TDLFS file system, then click OK.
   
  
• Click the Start Scan button.
   
   
  
• If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
   
  
   
  
• If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results and offer three (3) options.
• Ensure Cure is selected, then click Continue => Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  
  
• Get the report by selecting Reports

 

• Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.

Should I have gotten the report before rebooting? I got it after, hope that doesn't matter. Attached.

Right after the scan (and cure) before the reboot I got this message from avast!:

Yes, no more alerts since. The log was a several folders and text files, I copied the text files and locations in one text file. Attached. There was also tsk0001.dta -file. Do you want me to upload it for you?

Should I keep any of these programs you had me download? If not, how do I go about removing them? Do I just delete them normally, and what about the folders in C:\?

There hasn't been a single warning popup from avast! since yesterday. I see no problems and overall my computer is running more smoothly than in months. I couldn't be much happier

This is the first time anyone's been so helpful when I've had problems. Thank you so much for your help!

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems 

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean  :thumbsup:

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset  System Restore points:

Run OTL

• Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button.  It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself. 

: Keep Java Updated :

WARNING: Java is the #1 exploited program at this time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends that computer users disable Java

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport
