Windows script host error at startup
« on: October 01, 2013, 02:46:32 PM »
I had a virus alert and quarantined a dubious installation.

Now I get a script host error.   "can not find script file "c:\program files.....  up592.js"

Help I can't remove it!

Get, install and run CCleaner
Let it check the registry and fix the found problem(s).
Repeat the registry check untill nothing is found anymore.

Thanks - I haven't used ccleaner for so long.  What an improvement!  I'll let you know if it works

No joy.  Same error.

"Cannot find script file..."  I've checked the start up config and nothing suspicious.  No errors from cclean.  Looked through all installed programs but nothing I don't know.

This error occurred after I was installing a program (untrusted) - Installer for SummerSoft.  I was trying to get subtitles for a movie.  Bad choice.

No threat in the installer but then it tried to inject malicious software.

Avast did a great job stopping that, but now I suffer this error ever boot.

Thanks but that was the first thing I tried and I couldn't find any reference to it.  Something else must be calling it I assume

Let me know if this clears it

Warning This fix is only relevant for this system and no other, using on another computer may cause problems

Be advised that when the fix commences it will shut down all running processes and you may lose the desktop and icons, they will return on reboot

Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Code: [Select]
:Commands
[CREATERESTOREPOINT]

:OTL
O4 - HKLM..\Run: [TaskMngr] wscript.exe "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\MSOfficeUpdt\up5962.js" File not found

:Commands
[resethosts]
[emptytemp]
[Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Ok wow.  You are fantastic.  Time for me to have a look at OTL more deeply to try to work out what this did - but it has worked!   ;D

All I did was remove the run key for that file :)

If you are happy run OTL and press cleanup to remove it and its associated folders
