I'm not sure if the recent avast update caused the issue or if Windows Updates caused an as yet unseen problem with Avast. But my computer had restarted yesterday morning and I woke up to a new version of Avast. I wasn't able to use any browser without first disabling Avast. Later I had to reinstall the VPN I use. Also lost my connection to the wireless printer, and there were a host of other problems related to the update/s and restart.

I'm not sure if this is related to Avast's update, though it seems that way, or if there is an issue being caused by Windows Update.

Right now I'm browsing without Web Shield because otherwise I can't connect.

Any thoughts/suggestions/potential resolutions other than... different av? I know Avast is gonna miss me as a free subscriber. lmao
