Is there a way to get the GUI back before this 2014 bland "Streamlined look" was released?  I updated the 2013 program in hopes of some bug fixes without coming to the forum first.  Next thing I know, after the reset, this horrible (my opinion) new "Streamline" GUI is presented.  It's like going from Windows 7 to Windows 8 with that...ugly Tiles interface and you're not aware that the Start Menu will be GONE and replaced this this...thing.

Is there a Skin/Theme Pack?  I won't install Windows 8 nor 8.1 because of the flat/bland Tile graphics.  I know there are tools to install to change it.   I really am not in favor at all of the 2014 look.  I don't get why so many companies all want to be Microsoft Lemmings since Windows 8's....bland look.  I love change, when it Looks good or you have a choice.

So, please, consider users who weren't expecting this "New Streamlined" look.  I haven't updated my iPhone 5 from iOS 6.1.3 to 7 either because of the extremely flat and bland look. (Jobs would have been angry).
If there aren't any GUI packs, then perhaps that's another cool idea.

Thanks for reading.

A brand new version will always have issues.I find it better to wait after an bugfix update before installing an entirely new upgrade and this applies to most software.
Tried updating from 8.0.1497 as part of routine maintenance today in XP SP3 Pro and my system shutdown and start-up times became horribly slow. On restart Avast doesn't even load in the tray nor did a couple of other things. Fortunately a system restore to two days ago appears (touch wood) to have fixed my machine. THIS AVAST 9 IS NOT READY FOR PRIME TIME sadly. Not crazy about the new GUI either. At last for me it's LESS intuitive...

Until I can replace this laptop with a new one running Win7 Pro or Ultimate, let me know when Avast 9 is fixed for XP!

Is Avast going to fix this disaster, or just ignore XP and for that matter, Win7? I've had Avast since 5 and updated to 6, 7, and 8 without issue. The GUI was usually improved each time and easier to navigate. With 9 while I had it, that was ANYTHING but the case. I've recommended Avast to countless people too! Are they NUTS with this release?! "One size fits all" just ain't working.

VERY disappointed...

AND..., BTW..., after doing a system restore and many reboots, the box is now working normally after starting, but shutdown has lengthened to 21 - 28 seconds from what WAS 5 - 7. Took two hours and missing an important dinner to get back up and running on Avast 8.

Whoever designed Avast 9 must have worked in DC... ;-(, or is only interested in clients on Win8. Business will be on 7.1 until well into 2019. WHAT were they thinking???!!!

Sorry for the rant, but unless there is a radical fix, I'm going to need to find another AV solution for the Haswell machine I have to buy before the end of the year. VERY disappointed...

I have upgraded Avast 2 to Avast 3, Avast 3 to Avast 4, etc., over the years, without any problems ... until now.  I upgraded three computers today - one with XP Home Edition, the other two with XP Pro.  All three computers malfunctioned after the update.  That is a 100% FAILURE rate on Avast's part.  I had to reboot in safe mode on all three machines (Control Panel would not open - one of the MANY malfunctions) to uninstall (restoring to restore points has never worked for me), then reinstall the latest version 8 for which I have a full install (8.0.1489, from May, apparently).  Note to Avast: Microsoft is supporting Windows XP until April 8, 2014.  Avast MUST work with Windows XP until that time.

I have spent more then 6 hrs to read thru all the posts on this topic it seems many have faced issues with upgrade to 2014 on Win XP. I am also facing issues with similar nature on XP has anyone been able to find a solution to this?

Pl share steps to fix the issue in case anyone has cracked it.

first i get notified that my Virus definition is out of date and with i try to either update the definition or the program the connection hangs for ever. I am suspecting most of the XP users are facing similar issues.

I have also submitted the Ticket on support.avast.com awaiting reply...

Suggest you try a system restore to a few days ago and maybe you'll get lucky. Then stick with Avast 8. IMO only another fresh release of Avast 9 will correct this, if they even care. I'm looking for alternatives for my next machine unless they come up with something good. This release was one major screw-up. :-(

Switched on pc this morning, avast as started saying suspicious item for a few windows apps(tiles) for winodws 8.1, what should I do, add to exclusion or delete them?. Name of item is APOD.exe, it does sound suspicious so I don't blame avast, what a stupid thing to call it if its not a virus. I don't have a clue what app it was I cant see any missing, so its only removed the exe. Its a brandnew release intended for win 8.1 users so they can carry on using there fav antivirus, the main focus as been getting it to run on win8.1 give them time, there wil be a patch/fix, they will be working as we type.

System freezes after automatic installation of 2014. Had to go back to previous registration point which resulted in a non working version of Avast (registration not valid - not able to get a registration).
Download from Avast website of 2014 also resulted in freeze. Cannot remove Avast from computer.

How do I solve this?

Boot Up of Windows XP SP3 is Stuck

My system is Windows XP SP3.  Installed AVAST 2014 (9.0.2006) in safe mode with networking as administrator.  Re-booted my system into normal mode.  Everything functions properly.  Then I completely shut down my system.

This morning, I powered on my system, and booted up Windows in normal mode.  My system boots through the Windows XP splash screen, then it becomes stuck right before the desktop appears, with a blank screen and missing icons.

Re-booted Windows a few more times in normal mode.  Exactly the same result each time.  My system is stuck.

Re-booted Windows in safe mode with networking as administrator.  Through the Windows Services panel (services.msc), I set Avast to "manual" start-up and clicked Apply, then OK.

Re-booted Windows in normal mode.  My Windows XP system boots up properly, except Avast is not started.  Through the Windows Services panel (services.msc), I manually start up Avast, which Avast starts up properly.

I may have to set the Avast start-up to manual, until this problem is fixed.  By the way, I did not have this problem with the previous version of Avast (version 8.*)

Why did you choose to install avast! while in Safe Mode ???
What Security related programs are on your system besides avast! ???
What AV did you have before avast! and how was it removed ???

Why did you choose to install avast! while in Safe Mode ???

Because I had a previous problem installing Avast in normal mode.  It installed properly in normal mode.  I rebooted in normal mode.  Then Avast would not start properly, and the icon would not appear in the bottom right hand corner next to the clock.

Furthermore, my Windows Control Panel would not start, and became stuck.  My Windows Control Panel would function properly again, after I uninstalled Avast 9.*.

None.

None, except Avast.  Previous Avast 8.* functioned properly on my system.  Did a complete uninstall of Avast 8.* from Windows Control Panel, before installing the latest Avast 9.*.
