I’m very disappointed  with the new version of Avast . I had to uninstall in my two machines . One  is win xp and the other Vista . On both  it was a complete mess . I went back to previous version 8 and now its OK .

Sorry for above comments . Now  I installed  Avast Internet Security without any problem . Program cannot be installed over existing one , you must first uninstall existing version using  aswclear in SAFE MODE an the proceeded to install the new version that you have previously downloaded to your desktop

Everytthing is OK now.

I suggest you disconnect from internet until new program is installed . Then reconnect and wait everything updates .

Why did you choose to install avast! while in Safe Mode ???

Because I had a previous problem installing Avast in normal mode.  It installed properly in normal mode.  I rebooted in normal mode.  Then Avast would not start properly, and the icon would not appear in the bottom right hand corner next to the clock.

Furthermore, my Windows Control Panel would not start, and became stuck.  My Windows Control Panel would function properly again, after I uninstalled Avast 9.*.

Quote
What Security related programs are on your system besides avast! ???

None.

Quote
What AV did you have before avast! and how was it removed ???

None, except Avast.  Previous Avast 8.* functioned properly on my system.  Did a complete uninstall of Avast 8.* from Windows Control Panel, before installing the latest Avast 9.*.

Edit:

There are others reporting similar problems:

http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility in safe mode, then reboot into normal and reinstall avast

This is what I did this evening:

1.  Booted my Windows XP SP3 system into safe mode with networking as administrator.

2.  Ran the Avast uninstall utility.  It removed Avast (or so it said).  Verified that Avast is not present in the Add/Remove Programs panel in the Windows Control Panel.

3.  Rebooted in normal mode.  Installed latest Avast 9.* from website, with no problems so far.

4.  Rebooted again in normal mode.  Icons on bottom right hand corner not appearing properly, particularly Avast is not showing up at all.

5.  Rebooted again in normal mode.  Windows starts-up normally through the splash screen.  Then it becomes stuck before the desktop is suppose to appear.

My only remedy at the moment is one of the two below:

1.  Set the Avast start-up to "manual" in the Windows Services panel (services.msc); or,

2.  In the Avast troubleshooting menu, check mark the "Load avast! services only after loading other system services"

In either case, I would then start up Avast manually by clicking on the desktop icon.

After reading a number of posts, and screwing up 2 computers....I have come to the conclusion that AVAST 2014 sucks! I installed it (via the program upgrade option) on a Windows 7 Pro in a Domain Controlled network. The firewall would not enable with the extremely descriptive error "AVAST cannot start the firewall"....boy, don't you know that sure gave me a clue as to where to start troubleshooting. After an hour or two, I gave up and went back to Version 8. The next install was on a Windows 7 Ultimate machine. Upon reboot, all hell broke loose. There were so many things wrong, I didn't even attempt to troubleshoot the problem(s). The next trick was trying to remove the Ver. 9 software. Every time I tried to uninstall, the computer would hang at creating a system snapshot. I tried to kill the process AvastUI....yeah, good luck with that. Then I tried Revo Uninstaller...it hung up when the Avast program uninstaller started...hence reboot #3. I tried to manually remove the software....then I hit myself in the nuts with a hammer because I thought it might take my mind off removing this piece of crap software. I finally booted to MiniXP and deleted the directory structure in Program Files, then it was back to reboot #(who the hell knows, 'cause I lost count). I manually went through the hive and removed the traces of Avast which I thought would allow the computer to actually reboot to an error free Win7. Installed Ver. 8 and all is well. (Except my nuts still hurt!) After all that, I find out that there is a program called aswclear.exe. If I could, I would love to shove the printed copy of the software code for 2014 up somebody's ass.

I have spent more then 6 hrs to read thru all the posts on this topic it seems many have faced issues with upgrade to 2014 on Win XP. I am also facing issues with similar nature on XP has anyone been able to find a solution to this?

Pl share steps to fix the issue in case anyone has cracked it.

first i get notified that my Virus definition is out of date and with i try to either update the definition or the program the connection hangs for ever. I am suspecting most of the XP users are facing similar issues.

I have also submitted the Ticket on support.avast.com awaiting reply...

Hello,

Try to repair the program manually:

Click on "Start", find "Control Panel" and click on it. A new
window will open. In this window you should see the icon " ADD/REMOVE
PROGRAMS" or "Programs and Features". Again, you should click on it. Then choose the "avast!
Antivirus" and select "REPAIR".

If this does not help.

You can try to reinstall the program using the avast! uninstall utility, which can be downloaded from this web page, and save it to your hard drive:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

Before running the uninstall utility, you have to first boot in safe mode (how to boot in safe mode: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/boot_failsafe.mspx?mfr=true). Or disable the avast! self-defense module. To do this, open the avast! Settings, select troubleshooting, then uncheck the box "Enable avast! self-defense module".

Restart your computer.
Now download the avast! antivirus 2014 from the link or our web page below:

Free:http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
Pro: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
Internet Security: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
Premier: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

Please save the installation file onto your computer and then run it to re-install the avast! program.

Seems like most of devices on my.avast.com have been upgraded to v9 recently :)
Also, a false positive was quickly fixed via Streaming update/in cloud if I am not mistaken! Nice touch!

It would certainly be nice if instructions are kept as up-to-date as the program itself.
1. The uninstall utility prompts you for permission to boot into safe mode before it actually does it's job.
Therefore booting into safemode first, is not needed.
2. Always download the programs needed to remove your current protection before you remove that protection.
The last thing you wan to d is be on-line without any protection.
Just my 2 cents. :)
