Just received VPS update 131029-0 Now the pop-up says "Google end of DDoS". No voice. Whatever next?

I think there have been hundreds of posts confirming this behaviour. That's something what you'd usually call a well known, confirmed bug. Since you are clearly receiving the VPS updates, dunno what you need next. Wait for the cosmetic issue to be fixed. Meanwhile, perhaps you have some more entertaining things to do than staring at the screen waiting for VPS update popup and voice message.

Things wouldn`t be looked at so harshly if this Avast version was a BETA - but it isn`t - and has so many bugs in it it is sorely affected, as shown by the numerous postings here.
Fortunately, my only bug is with the pop-up and voice, else Avast is working just fine on my computer.

I don`t look at my screen waiting for VPS updates,  pop-ups with voice, etc. but find it interesting when they do arrive.

Avast is still the best antivirus programme in my opinion.

If you've received this VPS update, then your IE slowdown has been fixed. :) :) :)

I looked at ZoneAlarm's interface: there were no refusals for Avast; just some "allow" and some "ask". Anyway I removed the rules by always selecting "ask"; I expected the permission request but this did not come. I also tried always selecting "allow", without results.
Might there be an incompatibility between ZoneAlarm and Avast 9?

Instead of setting the rules  to ask, delete them.  That should work.

Attention                                Resolve All
Some shields are off:  Turn on

Where is the information stating which shields are off?
Only 3 shields are on, but I'm not sure where the others are (IM, P2P).
Clicking "Turn on" does nothing.
Clicking "Resolve All" does nothing.

Plus there's an exclamation mark on the icon in the system tray bringing attention to the issue that I can't fix.

I still trust Avast, but this UI isn't user friendly or intuitive at all and I got my first computer in the mid 1980's so learning and using new software is no big deal.
It's rather easy to end up with 4 or more open windows unlike pretty much any other program aside from the OS.
It takes time time and work to dig through all of the menus, windows, and options.
How about using tabs?

In any event, I'm grateful for the update and great software.
Some advice on the shields issue would be nice.

The number of real-time shields in avast! 2014 is reduced by merging some of them to another. The P2P Shield, IM Shield and Behavior Shield are now a part of the File System Shield, while the Network Shield with Script Shield are a part of the Web Shield.

This would all depend on what version of avast Ken has installed :-\

Seriously, P2P and IM integrated into File System Shield? I don't see any configuration option for those two by the way. I don't see option for network settings either (It was absent in Avast 8 I suppose, too). Avast is smart ;) Earlier most of us used to ignore those shields while installing but now, you just can't. Rather, you have to disable them via settings? Right.
