Constant Web shield alerts
« on: October 17, 2013, 04:05:46 PM »
My sister asked me to look at her laptop. It was extremely slow. I suspected typical malware issues so I started by uninstalling several of the typical things installed by the unsuspecting users. The laptop was now fast enough to run a full virus scan, Mcafee. No threats were detected. Since I hate Mcafee I uninstalled it and installed Avast free edition. Immediately after connecting to the internet web shield alerts start (1-2 per second) and does not stop. They are all the same,
  • Object:2f4f4f.com/script.php?sid
  • Infection: URL:Mal
  • Process:C:\Windows\explorer.exe

This occurs without any applications open. It only occurs when an internet connection is made. A full boot scan by AVast only found two malwares [PUP] which were moved to the chest.

Searching for an answer here I saw this thread (http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=53253.0) explaining a process of saving log files for posting here. I followed all the suggestions and have attached the log files. The only problem was with Rouge killer. The application stops during the process of detecting high jacked policies. It apparently finds 4 of them but I am unable to clean them or obtain a log file.

Any advise would be appreciated. I have no idea what else can be done short of a full format reinstall. The internet speed remains about 10% of what it should be.

NOTE: I could only attach 4 logs per post. The OTL logs are in the next post.

My apologies. I thought this was the correct thread for Avast free edition. Apparentley, I should have read the WHOLE title. If this post can be moved there that would be great.

Thanks

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Open OTL again and click the Quick Scan button. Post the log it produces in your next reply.
THEN

Download and Install Combofix

Download ComboFix from one of the following locations:
Link 1
Link 2

VERY IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

* IMPORTANT - Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools. If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link here
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • Accept the disclaimer and allow to update if it asks

  • When finished, it shall produce a log for you.
  • Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.[/b]
Notes:
1. Do not mouse-click Combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.
2. Do not "re-run" Combofix. If you have a problem, reply back for further instructions.

3.  If after the reboot you get errors about programmes being marked for deletion then reboot, that will cure it.

Please make sure you include the combo fix log in your next reply as well as describe how your computer is running now

I followed your suggestions. The web shield issue has disappeared. The internet speed and overall performance seems quite good now. Attached are the log files from OTL scans (2) and Combofix.

I have know idea what any of those steps did but apparently your genius worked. I can't thank you enough! Maybe my sister will finally listen to me and purchase Avast rather than Mcafee lol.

Not at all! I'm quite impressed. Thanks again. BTW I told her the story. She said Mcafee was not able to walk her through this prior to giving it to me. She was so impressed she is ditching them for Avast.

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

I would recommend that you completely uninstall Java unless you need it to run an important software.
In that instance I would recommend that you disable Java in your browsers until you need it for that software and then enable it. (See How to diasble Java in your web browser and How to unplug Java from the browser)

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:
