Avast 2014 IS: Blocks java based applications
« on: October 16, 2013, 10:24:59 AM »
After having installed the latest Update my favourite RSS application RSS OWL is not longer able to connect with the internet.

Even putting java and the application on the exclusion list or switching of parts of Avast IS is not enabling the sofwares access to the internet.

Switching off Avast only brings it back to normal.

Any clues what happend?

That's a problem with IPv6 in connection with Java. Avira's Antivir had the same problem after they started "supporting" IPv6. At least they had an option do deactivate it...

Well, I have the free edition, so no firewall. But deactivating Avast solves the problem temporarily.

Hi, I've just installed RSS OWL with avast Premier + latest JAVA JRE. Never have seen this app before, still it seems to me everything is working ok - have just let it download the recommended set of feeds and already got over 2000 articles. Seems like it is communicating with the net just fine.

Have you restarted after install?

Java has just asked me to update to JRE 7U45, so'll retest with the latest JRE and post my results with latest version.

Update: working just ok with JRE 7U40 and 7U45.

good hint! java only updates its 32bit version, but I was using a completely outdated version for my x64 programs :D
So an update solved that problem :)

I'm having the same problem. I'm running both the latest 32 and 64 bit versions of Java and  Avast 2014. The three things I've tried that use Java all have had problems:

- Jdownloader : fixed by installing the version 2 beta

- RSSOwl - the problem is with the web shield. Disabling "Use Intelligent Stream Scanning", updating a single feed, then turning it back on seems to have fixed it.
               - ( It's in Settings : Active Protection : Click the cog to the left of "ON" for "Web Shield"

- Opera : Fixing RSSOwl seems to have fixed Opera too.

Same problem here - with Avast Internet Security, since the latest update the firewall prevents RSSOwl from connecting to the Internet. I have Win 7 with both 32 and 64-bit Java7u45. Turning the Intelligent Stream Scanning setting off and on doesn't help - it's not the web shield that's the problem in my case, but the firewall...

Any ideas?

Correct ashWebSv.dll version 9.0.2006.160 for the initiali release of avast 2014! Fixes mostly JAVA problems with IPv6 traffic.

1. Disable avast! self-defense module (Settings -> Troubleshooting -> Enable avast! self-defense module)
2. Download http://public.avast.com/~rypacek/patches/webshield-160.zip WebShield-160.zip package and extract to any folder.
3. Open Control Panel / Services, and stop "Avast! Antivirus" service
4. Copy all files into \Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast\ folder (overwrite existing) - the tool to copy the files must be running under administrator
5. Start the "avast! Antivirus" service again, in control panel.
6. Enable avast! self-defense module and reboot

I have solve it.

We have to add to the exclusion list process java.exe,javac.exe and javaw.exe in the options of web security in avast. it solve the problem for me.
