I had this for the first time today.
I installed 2014 a few weeks ago.
Running 2014.9.0.2011.
On machine with vista ultimate 64 bit.

When it happened I was starting a few programs as soon as i could log on and before windows had settled down. I wondered if this could be related.
I rebooted and all seems ok now.

v9.0.2011 is outdated. The latest version is 9.0.2013.

Update and see if it resolves the issue...
Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

I have installed 9.0.2013.

It happened again.
I was downloading software on another computer and started loading apps straight away.

Rebooted and all is fine.
I think avast should investigate....

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

If i reboot without repair all is fine.
I have only just installed new version and had issue with old and new version.

If i wait for pc to settle down all is ok. I think this is a timing issue.
Just because pc is repaired and rebooted does not mean issue has gone away.
Not a major issue but i still think avast should investigate and try to re-produce.
I suggest trying with slow internet and launch other programs as soon as windows booted, logged on.

As I have said it is not an issue for me now, but if avast does not want others to experience this then...

Color me crazy, but wouldn't it make more sense if avast! just worked when you installed it? Like, download it, install it, and have it turn on without having to jump through a zillion crazy hoops to make it work?

It seems to me that if avast! isn't capable of working the way a software product should work (you know, silly things like turning on when you open it, etc.) maybe it's time to research a more competent software. These are the people that are promising to protect our systems. And yet, in order to turn it on, I have to reboot my system three times, right click the icon, turn around three times, spit under a harvest moon, and sacrifice a small animal to my favorite god. It seems beyond ridiculous. How about if I just turn it on, and it's... um... on?

Anyone going to work on this oh-so-complex problem? Or are we stuck in bizarro-land as long as we are avast! users?

Let me know when the product us updated to reach sane levels of usability. Until then, I'm on a quest for reasonable usable, functional, rational levels of ON vs. OFF.

Avast is working it is just that the security centre is so scatterbrained that it forgets Avast is running

Just disable and then re-enable the Avast shield and that kick starts it again

I have had this issue intermittently for months since installing 2014. I have not seen it for a while until yesterday when I updated the program to the latest version.

Although it appears to be Microsoft Windows that has the issue (not seeing that Avast is running) you would think Avast would find a fix. Their software needs to play well with Windows.

For support I would advise not recommending an uninstall and re-install unless absolutely necessary. AVG recommended that to me because their scans were hogging all my CPU resources. I assured them I would uninstall and re-install software that works. That's when I turned to Avast. I'm still waiting for Avast to fix this issue.

As Essexboy directed, the fix is simple. Disable Shields via right click Avast Icon, then Re-enable them and that will sync Window Center.

I have done that....but as I said I have seen this intermittently. Bottom line, I expect Avast to fix the problem...not me.
I want software that installs and runs without support. As a Quality/IT guy I do enough troubleshooting at work. I have recommended Avast to many co-workers and friends...most of whom are not computer savvy, so guess who has to support them.

It's a little hard for Avast to fix something that isn't their fault. :)

Yes and it's in fact, more of a nuisance then a security issue as Avast is protecting as it will indicate. It's simple a matter of Windows Centre not recognizing

Unless you are a programmer I don't know how you could know this is a Windows issue. There certainly must be programming protocol on software development related to running properly in Windows. Just because Windows doesn't recognize Avast is running doesn't mean it is Windows' fault. As a software developer Avast should certainly resolve this with Microsoft even if it is not Avast's fault.
