Error while installing MSDE: 0x00000643

ok it didn't work but now i do have a log, i checked out that article but i don't think it's going to help - i have even restarted the server checked all the services etc it all looks good to me, the log is big should i mail you?

The installation failed in "Registering performance counters from sqlctr.ini", because of access denied.
Check if you have Full control rights in registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Perflib\009, these rights should be granted for Administrator and SYSTEM accounts.

ok that reg key is completely empty, - i hope i'm not being comptletely dumb here but how do i grant access here?

It's a bit tricky under Win2K (under XP, it's much easier).
The trick is to use regedt32.exe instead of RegEdit.exe (both are part of the OS). RegEdt32.exe has some extra features, though, such as setting of key permissions.

From command line run:
lodctr /r:perfstringbackup.ini

It will repair registry entry on which the MSDE installation fails.

ok that still didn't help! but i thanks both of you very much for your help and we have full confidence in you guys and your product of which we bought 60 licenses last week, but what i am going to do is leave this server as is as it runs our exchange and i'm going to reload the server that the adnm was originally on and just load it right back on there!!! - i'm going to reload it only because it's giving some stupid "unknown hard error" and restarting - hope it's not a hardware thing, but thanks a lot for your time i really appreciate it!!.

you mean the server i'm going to reload? no it doesn't give a blue screen it just comes with a small window saying "system error" under that "unknown hard error" a couple of seconds later nt authority system shutdown 60.... 59.... 58 .........0 restart
- i have already deleted the patition and started doing it sorry but thanks a lot,
i think it may have been some corruption with the raid

Solved the "Error while installing MSDE: 0x00000643" problem by doing the following:

in a command box : "lodctr /r"
this sets some registry settings about performance strings to the right settings.

Afterwards setup went OK

Hi,

I had an almost identical error log so I tried this fix (above), now when I try to install ADNM from the disk, it shows as already installed.
How do I reset it so I can try install again? I am running Win Srvr 2003 stndrd SP2,
By the way I checked in "uninstall programs" and ADNM is not listed either.

I had a very similar issue installing ADNM with MSDE - the MSDE part of the install was failing... In my case it was due to a self signed SSL Certificate (go figure) in the MMC Certificates Store (for "COMPUTER")
I exported (with private key) the self signed cert - removed the Self-Signed Cert, Installed MSDE OK, then imported the self-signed cert back in

All then worked
