After running a routine scan, avast! suggested I run Boot-time.  I ran Boot-time over night.  In the morning I found a blue screen with with script listing three found items.  I was asked to select an action and I chose 'chest'.  The blue screen then continued to scan and when I returned an hour later it was stopped and I assumed completed.  I hit the Esc key and the message 'scan cancelled' appeared.  My laptop (with XP Pro) then continued to start up.  What opened up was not my desktop but the original Windows desktop showing the rolling landscape.  I checked recent docs and it was empty.  I check for my files and there all gone.  I checked the C drive and it shows it to be 60% used, as it was prior to scanning, so I assume my file are still on disk.  If I go to Program Files they shown as hidden.  How can I restore my files?

Sorry - I can not get a screen shot to attach.  Please instruct how it should be done.

The chest lists 13 items from the Boot-time scan I ran yesterday.  Two of the items list the virus as  Win32:Mal0b-HP{Cryp] and the rest as  Java:Agent-ALU[Expl] or similar.

Try this

  • Download RogueKiller  and save it on your desktop.

NOTE: If using IE8 or better Smartscreen Filter will need to be disabled

  • Quit all programs
  • Start RogueKiller.exe.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  •     Click on Scan

  • Wait for the end of the scan.
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Click on the Delete button.

  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Next click on the ShortcutsFix

  • The report has been created on the desktop.
Please attach:    All RKreport.txt text files located on your desktop.

Did it locate anything else ?  As I believe the problem was that the file properties were changed to hidden, now Avast should not do that
