I was wondering since there is a 64 bit operating system out now will viruses designed for the 64 bit platform still affect 32 bit operating systems. And if it still gets on a 32 bit system will it still cause damage.

If a virus is written specifically for Win64 platform, it won't do any harm to Win32 platform because it wouldn't run there.
However, it would be possible to create a hybrid that would run on both platforms. Or, an easier approach, is to stay with the Win32 platform that is present in Win64 as well.
