Are you using the add/remove (Program and Features) function or are you running the uninstaller direct?

I was using Program and Features as the program didn't have an uninstaller.

I only asked because I had never experienced Deep Scan kick in when using the Windows add/remove function.

If you use the avast uninstaller you will be prompted to reboot into safe mode.
If you use the Windows add/remove function it will not work right due to the
avast self-protection module.  :)
