Can't update and e-mail problem

I increased the time out for OE and Internet Mail and still have the problem.

I also seem not to be getting e-mail that I normally do. Does that suggest anything to you?

I disabled NORTON and still have the same problem as in my original post regarding e-mails. Any suggestions?

I continue to bet into a firewall problem...
See into the firewall settings if the following programs should be allowed to connect:

ashServ.exe (avast! antivirus service)
ashWebSv.exe (avast! Web Scanner) (allow server rights)
ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) (allow email rights)
ashUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service)
avast.setup (avast! Update executable)

specially the two bold ones...

I ran A-SQUARED Hijack Free. It detected no malware, but more than 11 TROJANS, including NERTE, MASTERLOCK, STARTER WORM, AUTOTROJ-C, FLOOD.AV, BIG FOOT, BIOSYS.MACRO, etc.

I then ran a scan with AVAST and got "no infections" found.

I am having trouble with downloads, internet use, emails, slow action, lock-ups, and have to access the WWW with my dial-up connection rather than the regular way.  I posted a similar response on a new thread.

I really need some professional advice.
