Same issue (StackHash_6c79) with IE8 x64 under Windows 7 x64. Avast version 2014.9.0.2008, defs current up to today's date.

I'm using IE8 x86 for the time being and will do so until this is either fixed or my subscription runs out in 91 days. After that, I'll look to use an alternative if this isn't fixed.

Well... as I said above, Avast had 90 days to fix this and they haven't. So I've removed it and started using AV from a different vendor. Shame really because I've been generally happy with Avast for quite some time. This is issue is obviously very easy to replicate for testing so for them to just ignore it is a bit rubbish really.
Why are you running IE8 in windows 7 ??? IE11 is the current version and avast 2014.9.0.2013 is the current stable release.

Avast has stopped working - error win7u
« Reply #151 on: March 16, 2014, 10:24:38 AM »
Hi.

Yesterday I chose to upgrade my Avast Free Antivirus to the Pro version, after receiving the "one time offer" for only $9.99.
Downloaded the license file, activated it, received confirmation, Avast was happy, i was happy.

This morning, however, right after Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit booted up, i keep receiving this message, over and over again, even if i close the window or let it check online for solutions - it keeps poping up and the a.v. core wouldn't load :(

This is what i get:

-----

I'd like to think i did not do a mistake by putting my trust in AVAST (which, btw, i use since 2007 or so), especially taking your offer....

Please advise. I really want to have the a.v. working properly again.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum. :)
Step 1, try a repair: Control Panel > Programs and Features > select avast! uninstall > scroll down and run Repair > Reboot
If that doesn't work, do a clean install. You can find step by step instructions at:

Bob3160,
OK....you have 4 more years of happiness than I do....congratulations.

Simple question....I HOPE....

Have a 32 bit older HP Win XP Pro that is a desktop connected to an ISP via DSL modem.  Therefore it is sort of plain vanilla.  This machine is used by the GK's and I want to keep it fairly clean.

Have a multiple seat license for Trend Micro on a Dell that I bought and ran out of seats.  Consumer Reports recommended Avast.

Have the paid $19.99 version, not the free or the $9.99.

Loaded it yesterday.  The IE8 (which is the Highest Level of IE supported by Win XP Pro) is a little unstable on a couple of web sites and you have to refresh it sometimes.

However, it was really unstable when the Avast was installed.  Disabled all the BHO Add-On's in IE8 and figured out that Avast was the issue.  Both sites went back to their normal, less than what I would like state...but they work.

I downgraded to IE 7.  Then reinstalled IE 8.  The problem still persisted.  I then reset IE 8 to the default advanced settings.  NO JOY.  I am used the default security settings and have no custom or exception settings.  The Compatiably settings or option do not resolve it.

SO.  the Avast "IE 8 Add On" appears to be the issue.  Tried the repair.  No Joy.  Removed Avast.  Did a RegEdit cleaning for Avast.  Got rid of most of it, but some parameters would not delete.

Then downloaded a fresh copy of Avast and used the license file and installed it.

NOTHING has changed.  Have NOT played with the auto detection yet.

SO.....since you seem to the Guru about this, I am trying to understand what is going on.

1.  With the IE8 Add On disabled, WHAT specifically do you "Lose".  Remember that my pre-teen GK's use the machine and they click on everything.  The Trend Micro Titanium Worked great and the machine has not been attacked or unresponsive.  However, CR says that Trend is not that good and I will probably change once the license runs out to one of their higher rated products.

2.  I WILL play with the Auto Detection setting, but I think that is futile.....YOUR comments?

3.  Folks have commented on problems with the Beta.  A little hesitant to go that far.

This machine is only used a few hours per week.....and mostly for their Study Sites....but my GS does do a LOT of googling for games...

Thanks....

Using the following settings should stop the problems and still give you some of the benefits;

You are correct in not being able to use IE beyond version 8. you can however
use an updated browser from any of the other major Browsers manufacturers. :)

Same here,  as of 5-6 days ago, IE 8, 9, 10, 11 all are broken until I turn the Avast plugin off.  I wasted THREE DAYS uninstalling/reinstalling IE-11 thinking it was a microsoft problem.  I then turned off all plugins and it started working.  Turned on plugins one at a time and as soon as I turned on Avast plugin, IE crashed again.

I think disabled ALL plugins except Avast and it immediately crashed.  (Double click on IE icon, and window opens and IE crashes before I even get a chance to type in a URL!!!

Does ANYONE test the updates before releasing them to the public?  It broke ALL versions of IE, how could they not find this out before releasing it???

I just became a paid customer and really starting to regret it as I purchased the product and can't use IE unless I disable the plugin.  Why should I pay for something I have to disable in order to get IE to work??????????????????

EXTREMELY UPSET right now.

Hi Don20,
I am sorry about your problems with IE. Please could you let me know what version of Avast you have? Have you tried the newest version - 2015? There is IE plugin in version 10.0.0.29.

IE plugin was intensively tested with all supported IE versions (IE8+) before final release of Avast 2015. It was also released into beta several times and I haven't heard about similar issues that you mentioned.

thank you

Exactly the same problem for me. As my Virgin F.secure subscription is coming to an end I today installed Avast 2015.10.02208 on my Windows 64bit pc and laptop, both running Internet Explorer 11 version 11.0.9600.17420.

On both machines Internet Explorer keeps crashing whereas Chrome works fine.

If I disable the Avast add-on Internet Explorer then works normally.

Looks like it's going to be AVG free for me instead.

The add-on isn't your protection. Changing you AV because an add-on isn't functioning properly makes no sense.
It is however your computer and your choice.
