So I disabled Enhanced Protected Mode in IE11, re-enabled Avast Add-On. No Joy: IE still fails with Avast Add-On enabled. So back to Avast Add-On being disabled, which I do not like.

Bob: See my previous post. In my experience it makes no difference turning off Enhanced Protection Mode. IE11 does not work if you do that, only when you disable the Avast browser Add-On in IE11.
I beg to differ with you but avast! 2014 works very well with IE11 when the Enhanced Protection Mode is disabled.
The following screenshot I just created of Internet Explorer 11 in action should prove that point.

I had the AOS add-ons disabled
I had the Enhanced Proteted Mode unchecked
I had the Automated Configuration Scripts unchecked
I have tested both the upgrade and the clean install options.

Avast 2014.9.0.2011 does not let Internet Explorer 11 connect to internet on a Windows 7 x64 desktop via ADSL-modem.
There were no problems with the Avast 8.x

The only solution was to uninstall Avast 9.x and replace it with Comodo 6.x

Yet Avast 9.x does not prevent connecting to Internet via a GSM-modem if the AOS add-ons are disabled and Enhanced Protected Mode unchecked.

I am bewaiting the following release of Avast before testing any more.

I have a Motorola modem but don't have a clue if it's GSM or ADSL

The ADSL modem (A-link or Telewell as far as I remember) uses a fixed telephone line (wire) whereas the GSM-modem (Huawei and Nokia) connects wirelessly, mobile cellular line (3G).

I have a Galaxy Nexus and when I tether from that phone, I don't have any problems using the internet.

From his description above Bob appears not using ADSL but his Galaxy Nexus mobile phone (cellfone) to access the internet. That may explain why he thinks all is well with Avast 2014 and IE11, wheras us guys using landline ADSL connection have the problem as described.

I just hope this tread and information provided by users is actually being monitoredby Avast and they are doing something about it ?

I have been looking elsewhere for help. Just seen this item on Microsoft Community:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie11-windows_7/internet-explorer-1011-not-working/713d4b90-ce33-4620-92d2-a441d41538f1

You will see there is also a link back here.

The problem remains unresolved as far as I am concerned.

It seems I solved my problem following the tip from this topic: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=139601.0.

Disable the autodetection below and see if it works:

In my case the unchecking of "Use automatic configuration script" did not help.   I gather from another thread that Avast-team is aware of the problem and already drafting a solution.

I had to disable both auto detections to solve the problem, including "Automatically detect settings".

Me too. "Use automatic configuration script" was unchecked.
Also tried unchecking "Automatically detect settings". Again no joy.
Back to Avast Add-On uninstalled in IE11 for it to work.

Disabling AOS add-ons did not help and I did not find a way to uninstall them - hence I uninstalled Avast completely.
Altering the webshield.ini file might help but I did not want to spend any more hours on testing.

Use the change function which is one of the options offered when you use the normal Windows uninstall.
You can select which options will be installed or uninstalled after the change is made.
