Olddog:  Thank you for your comment - indeed, uninstalling AOS was possible as you instructed. In another forum somebody told that addons cannot be uninstalled if the "remove" box is disabled.  Such is the case of AOS when looked into tools-manage addons-more information.
Unfortunately, the removal of AOS did not help in getting IE working.   Nor did help the extra lines in webshield.ini.

BUTThe unchecking of "Automatically detect settings" in the Internet Options of LAN settings solved the problem as predicted by diego6111 on January 7, 2014.

Now Avast 9.x does not prevent using IE 11 and works beautifully side by side with Comodo 6.x. irrespective of AOS being enabled or disabled.
(ADSL-modem, make D-Link)

In addition, I had a possibility to test another ADSL-modem (ZyXel) in the very same ISP's network.  In this case the "Automatically detect settings" could remain checked.

What is the change from Avast 8.x to Avast 9.x to force the unchecking of LAN option's "Automatically detect settings" when IE stretches to internet via a D-Link ADSL modem??

Mine was the same but with ie 8. i Worked through every add on and the only one causing the issue was Avast. Just curious now does it now mean im susceptible to viruses through browsing the net?

Wish id have found this thread earlier would have saved me hrs of investigation lol.

Avast have replied to my case. Better late than never.

Ive not had chance to try this yet but i received the following instructions from avast.

Hello,
Please try to remove avast! Online Security browser extension from your machine following these steps:
Please go to Start > Control Panel > Uninstall a program (Programs and Features, Add or Remove Programs)
Select avast! and click on Uninstall/Change. then uncheck the browser protection checkbox.
Best regards

Its looks like an alternative to manually disabling add ons.

Timboo: Please be prepared for a disappointment - in my case the uninstallment of AOS AddOns did NOT help.  ( refer to above January 15, 2014)

I'd suggest for all those that are having problem with AOS and IE 11 to upgrade to the new beta as it fixes many issues http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=144768.0

Oh no. I was getting all excited that a fix for this Microsoft/Avast incompatibiity was forthcoming in next release of Avast. I guess maybe not. I still have Avast ad-on disabled in IE11 else it don't run, even with autodetect settings unchecked.

Did you use the avast removal tool to delete remnants before installing the beta ? the tool is in the same place as the beta download.

And what happens if you disable Avast Online Security ( AOS ) by right clicking the toolbar at the top of your browser and untick AOS, does IE work now ?

I'm now on version 2014.9.0.2013.
I cn report no change re incompatibility with IE11 on Win8.1 from my testing. Avast add-on has to be disabled.
I use Trend and McAfee elsewhere and don't have this problem.

The update to 9-0-2013 passed without problems.  Yet, IE 11 does not connect to internet without the uncheking of "Automatically detect settings" in Connections - LAN settings of the Internet Options.  Uninstalling or disabling of AOS addons has no effect.

I have no issue with the automatic detection of settings and IE 11, have you tried restoring/reset default settings in Internet Options - Advanced.
