The update to 9-0-2013 passed without problems.  Yet, IE 11 does not connect to internet without the uncheking of "Automatically detect settings" in Connections - LAN settings of the Internet Options.  Uninstalling or disabling of AOS addons has no effect.
On my system the checked box doesn't effect the loading of IE as you can see:

What ISP are you using and, how are you connecting to the internet ???

It also works and connects if I uncheck the box:

That probably means that the problem isn't related to autodetection.

Thank you Craigb and Bob3160 for your comments.  I have tried all the tricks that I found in this forum and anywhere else and the only one effective was to uncheck "Automatically detect settings".   This option was checked when Avast 8.x was in use but no longer ever since Avast 9.x was introduced.  The latest release 2013 did not bring any change in that respect.   I have reported my experiments in my previous comments here in this thread.

I do believe without a moment of hesitation that in some enviroments (eg. that of Bob3160's) it is possible to use Avast 9.x with automated settings detection for a LAN connection.  I also use a mobile line and Avast can stay with all the default options untouched.   I hardly believe it has anything to do with the ISP, which happens to be one of the biggest on the local markets - serving both wired and wireless connections.

I am happy using my wired connection with "unautomated settings detection" in LAN settings as long as it works so and hope my observation helps other users in their testing for a solution of this hitch.

My observations came from a laptop using WiFi. I'll take a look at my desktop computer this afternoon and see if
there's a difference when the connection is an ethernet connection. :)
My ISP is Comcast.

Welcome to the forum.:)
Unfortunately what you did solved nothing. It's called giving up.  :(

As I reported in an earlier post Avast 2014 broke IE on my Windows 7 64-bit as well. At that point only uninstalling Avast would resolve the problem. As a result I have been unable to use IE since November. A small update: As of today if I uncheck the "Detect Settings Automatically" box then IE will open and function normally.

So the problem is solved by making IE not detect what it obviously has a problem detecting... :)

Avast Free Antivirus 2014 9.0.2013 issued 22 January 2014 caused Internet Explorer to slow to a standstill on two of my computers.  I uninstalled Avast on both computers by left clicking: Start, Computer, Uninstall or change a program, Avast! Free Antivirus.  Then I reinstalled the previous Avast version 9.0.2011 issued 18 December, 2013 from:  www.oldapps.com/avast.antivirus.php.  Both computers now work fine again with Internet Explorer, and the Avast virus definitions update regularly giving me virus protection.  I am looking forward to hearing that Avast has issued a new update that will work with my Internet Explorer.

this is the message i received from avast.

Hello,

reinstall avast! completely, please. It seems to be the easiest
solution of the problem. Even if you did it before, do it again this
way, using the uninstall utility, please:

1) Uninstall the version of avast! that's currently installed on your
computer using our uninstall utility, that can be downloaded from this
page:

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe

2) Use it in safe mode of Windows - in this mode you don't need to
disable the avast's self-defense module. Here you can learn how to
start Windows in safe mode:

http://www.pchell.com/support/safemode.shtml

3) After using that tool, restart your computer.

4) Ensure there's no "alwil software" nor "avast software" folder in
C\Program Files and if it is, delete it

5) Download the latest version of avast! from this page:

Avast! Free AV: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe

6) Install it with default values, i.e. do NOT change anything during
the installation process, and everything should be OK again.

I have to chime in here too . After the last update (yesterday) , to 2014.9.2013 (Pro version) my internet (IE10) also became slow and unbearable (very noticeable right after the update and pc reboot)  . Even on a SSD drive its UNbearable .

Guess I too should uninstall and reinstall (?) .

It has gone extremely quiet since Feb 5.
Does that mean the uninstall and clean reinstall has worked and users can now use IE with avast add-on enabled with out fault ?

It works for some people but not all, I still get some broken page functionality with Windows 8.1 IE 11 although search speed was good again.

Same issue (StackHash_6c79) with IE8 x64 under Windows 7 x64. Avast version 2014.9.0.2008, defs current up to today's date.

I'm using IE8 x86 for the time being and will do so until this is either fixed or my subscription runs out in 91 days. After that, I'll look to use an alternative if this isn't fixed.

Well... as I said above, Avast had 90 days to fix this and they haven't. So I've removed it and started using AV from a different vendor. Shame really because I've been generally happy with Avast for quite some time. This is issue is obviously very easy to replicate for testing so for them to just ignore it is a bit rubbish really.
