You should only use sfc /scannow or sfc /scanonce in the command prompt. If use use /scanboot then it'll change your registry to scan at every boot, to disable the "sfc /scanboot " you'll need to edit the registry or use sfc /revert to disable it.

sfc /purgecache will empty the Win. cache folder that stores backup copies of the correct version of the system files. If you do this Win. will start fresh and rebuild the backup cache at the same time its running sfc and yes you'll need the Win CD....

I would just use sfc /scannow or sfc /scanonce

It only replaces the Windows protected system files, and only the one's that need to be replaced.

I don't know what OS your using ? but if its XP I don't even mess with SFC unless its a rather fresh OS. I do XP Repair and install SP2 & updates, doesn't take much more time than SFC and it does a better job IMHO.

I have to do it some time ago. It seems to repair file by file but you can't know what file is being replaced.
So, bad news, all files are back to the original ones into SP2.
There is not an option to 'repair'. You can overinstall Windows XP SP2. You will lose your updates and will need to get them again from windowsupdate site  ::)
