a problem again...
« on: May 28, 2005, 03:53:30 PM »
Hello...

Today, because my Windows XP detects a new hardware connected (ATWPKT2), and because I haven't this device, i decided to restore my system (because the New Hardware Wizard appears on every startup).
The date of the restore-point was in the end of April, 2005.
My software were uninstalled.

Because now i have a problem with avast! (i installed it on January 2005):
The current version (in my system) is 4.6.652 (may05).... But this morning i had Avast Home v 4.6.665 (the latest). When I try to update my Avast! version, it says that there isn't update for the program, says i use the latest version!!!

But i think 4.6.665 > 4.6.652, not you?
How can I install the LATEST avast! version automatically?
NOTE: Before the restore, i had Avast! antivirus on my Control Panel (add/remove programs). After, i haven't got the Avast! antivirus link in my Add/remove Programs panel...

Can you try to repair your installation?
Go to Control Panel > Add/Remove programs > avast! antivirus > Remove
Then choose Repair function in the popup window (Repair).
You must be connected to the internet while repairing.

If this does not help, can you uninstall / boot / install / boot again?

AFTER the fatal restore, i haven't "Avast! antivirus" in the Control Panel/ Add/remove Programs.

Is there an uninstaller program in C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4 ?

Thanks.

System Restore is pants and shouldn't be relied on (but marginally better than nothing), there are other options. I prefer to use disk imaging once a week to backup my complete drive, then if I have a serious problem that either can't be resolved or would take to long, I restore the last image.

SYSTEM RESTORE - Info - Troubleshooting
There are many, many reasons why a System Restore may fail. For example, see "Why are previous restore points not working?" in the "Troubleshooting" section of this official Microsoft page:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/plan/faqsrwxp.mspx

There's lots more on that page that's worth reading too. Note especially the sections on "Does System Restore protect personal data files?" (the short answer: no); "What should I do if System Restore does not work?"; "Why are my restore points missing or deleted?"; "Why does the System Restore Wizard lockup?"; and so on. Just a few minutes on that page ought to convince just about anyone that System Restore is not intended for heavy-duty system protection!
