Avast Webshield blocks streams and some internet videos
« on: October 29, 2013, 02:35:43 AM »
Hi there.
First of all, let me say that I'm normally a very happy user of the free version of Avast. Lately though, I've been noticing some strange things.
I like to watch streams on twitch.tv, and I often watch videos on the internet. The webshield though, seems to be blocking this, well some of it. I cant watch Twitch.tv without it making it reloading the stream constantly. I can without problems watch YouTube videoes and stuff like that, but I cant watch the videoes on my local news site.

Everything works perfectly, as soon as I disable the Webshield. I'm using Windows 8.1 and Google Chrome.
Can you help me?

Thanks.

It's possible these blocks are legitimate and are now detected because you are now running Avast! 2014, whereas version 8.0 was not able to detect or see these threats.

Maybe something one might think about a bit before disabling WebShield?

Links to these sites are welcome, and I will investigate each of them for possible site malware for you.

If you post a link, please make them as hxxp:// and not http:// so they are not a live connective link for unaware users to prevent any possible infection to them.  Doing it this way will prevent any possible harm coming to other users here.

Screenshots of the warning pop-ups will help also.

Many streaming sources though using http ports, don't strictly use HTTP protocol, this can mess up the web shield as it is expecting HTTP protocol.

Is there a particular area of twitch.tv that you have problems with ?
I just checked access and was watching the 24hr Battlefield Stream for a while without any issue.

hxxp://www.twitch.tv and hxxp://www.ekstrabladet.dk

I do NOT get any warning pop-ups. On ekstrabladet.dk - it just shows a black screen where the video should be. On Twitch.tv - it just keeps reloading the stream. Shows the stream for 3 seconds or so, and reloads again. No warnings whatsoever.

Its every single stream on Twitch.tv
If it helps anyone, then I can record a video of what happens?

I just tried 3 videos on twitch.tv and was able to watch them for over 10 minutes each without a problem and webshield on.

I dont know what to  tell you.. I just know that, as soon as I disable the Webshield, it starts working.

Whilst this might seem strange as it doesn't relate to the web shield, I just wonder if it could have an effect.
With the web shield enabled - Try disabling the 'avast! online security' plugin in Chrome and see if that makes a difference.
Sorry I can't tell you where to do this in Chrome as I don't use it.

Thanks Para-Noid.

Whilst you are here, you could try connecting to the twitch.tv site and see if the streams are working for you with Chrome, Web Shield and 'avast! online security' enabled.  I suspect that there may be more to this than the Chrome, Web Shield and 'avast! online security' combo.

Both wXw.twitch and wXw.ekstrabladet come out as clean at the moment.

Possible iffy add-ons or rogue toolbars present in your browsers?  Browsers clean?  Neither DavidR or Eddy are reporting issues.

Only thing showing is a redirection for ekstrabladet in zulu and a minor elevation in risk in zulu Netblock size.  Otherwise everything looks normal from here.

twitch.tv works great here! Chrome w/AOS enabled and Firefox w/AOS enabled.
As far as the web shield goes I never disable it. All shields up and always running.

Sorry it took so long to get back to this thread.
