The avast! service is off
« on: November 01, 2013, 03:53:44 AM »
Hello,
Starting today, avast! 2014.9.0.2006 Free indicates the avast! service is off.  Clicking the presented start link and selecting yes to the UAC prompt appears to have no effect.

Win 7 64-bit.  Installed new this past weekend.  avast! installed on Sunday.  Today it refuses to run.
I do not have any other antivirus/malware programs installed.

What do you suggest?

Thank you,
M

Welcome.
Have you tried a 'Repair'
If you have not as yet, go to Control Panel/ Programs,Features and locate Avast then Click 'Uninstall/Change' then scroll down and select 'Repair'. Follow any instructions and Reboot if not directed too.
Hope it helps. :)

Thank you,
Performed the repair and rebooted.  avast! still not running.

Can you do a 'Clean Install' using most recent Avast removal tool that runs in Safe Mode then reinstall a new download of the version of your choice.
Most recent versions and tool here: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=136785.0

I used the removal tool in safe mode, rebooted, re-installed newly downloaded avast! Free.
Still not running - can't start it.

The avast! Antivirus service is stopped.  If I attempt to start it I receive the following:
Windows could not start the avast! Antivirus service on Local Computer
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion.

To bad for your issues, there must be something else at play here.
Sorry I couldn't help, however there are other users who may have other suggestions.
Good Luck. :)

Thanks for the help schmidthouse.  I appreciate it.
I've also tried malwarebytes - scanned clean.
I'm still not sure why avast! remains off.

hi gobstopper,

A few .jpg's attached below to compare with your system.  Is taskmanager showing avastsvc.exe as present and running as a process?  Click 'show all processes' to view.

In the Search programs and files box  Start>search programs and files>type services.msc>press enter.  Compare what you see to the pics below and if different say where it is different.  avast! runs here w/o any problems.
Windows 10 Home 64-bit 22H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.1.6099 (build 24.1.88821.762)  UI version 1.0.797
 UI version 1.0.788.  Windows 11 Home 23H2 - Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Avast Premier Security version 24.2.6105 (build 24.1.8918.827) UI version 1.0.801

I was having the same issue, and then found another forum that said to use the avastclean.exe program, which will make you go to safe mode.  run it, then reboot into safe mode again and do a clean install of the new Avast from safe mode.  I tried it, and it worked for me.

Thanks everyone.  This morning on boot-up avast! is happy and running.  I don't have an explanation of why.

@mchain - The service was present, but stopped. Attempting to start the service resulted in the following msg:
Windows could not start the avast! Antivirus service on Local Computer
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion

@Vytasb - I did do a clean install as you suggest earlier in the thread.

They say time heals all wounds.  I just didn't expect the saying would apply to my computer.

It is still a problem.
Fire up the PC tonight and the avast! service is not running - and will not start.
I'm getting the same behavior as described in the opening post.

Any ideas?

Note: You need to be online doing this install.

The solution to your problem:

Use this installer:

Avast Free: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
Avast Pro: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup_online.exe
Avast IS: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_online.exe
Avast Premier: http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_online.exe

And use this uninstaller:

If you are using a paid version make sure...

Once you have uninstalled Avast... check if Device Manager if there are any NDIS firewall avast drivers. If they are remove them and then reinstall.

Solved:  I uninstalled Asus AI Suite.  After the uninstall, avast! would always run.

Suggest starting a support ticket with avast! about your motherboard driver package issue(s).  Include in the ticket all relevant details, including your version number of the asus AI Suite.

Possibly a bug in avast!

Don't bother with phone support.  Not recommended.
