If I am not mistaken, avast! 8 Free works on Windows 2000. Some extra features may be missing but in general it should work. After all there are tens of thousands people still using it.

the only reason other AV's were suggested was purely because the OP has Win2000.
Yep!! Btw: for Win2000 and WinXP I still use AVAST! 4.8.1368.0 (full pro; with a one year free license – just register normally on the website by email request; registration code for new avast is working on 4.8!) – and I really love the on-access-scanner-messages always popping up in the right lower corner of the display; that's very useful for seeing what's going on ...

So please AVAST!-guys: don't let AVAST 4.8 die and please make it downloadable again on your website!!! It is still the best AV-solution for people who are aware where they surf to (i.e. avast 5/6/7/8/9 might have more protection schemes, but basic protection is there – and that's the most important thing).

Btw: the only issue is some lowered responsiveness while updating; but with the setting "ask when update is available", you can postpone update to the first best situation you can afford it and are not bothered by a blocked PC; that is done best some minutes or even seconds after that (beautiful) small green popup. And also the updating window is not too big (as it is in the later versions). The only unnecessary thing is the focus stealing nag screen popping up from time to time ... AVAST! 4.8 still has best design of all the versions since then!

avast! 4.8... I've thought it was a dream... Need to read three times to believe... 10 years...
I think it's time to move on... It's not true the protection is the same. Far from the reality...

That also explains why so many people are still clinging to Windows XP.
15 years old, hard to keep secure and soon will loose all updates but, many still love their antiques. :)
I just hope that their insecure computer don't make it harder for the rest of us to stay safe.

Give us an OS in the classic design of Windows 2000/XP on the surface (including some additional functionalities like FolderSize etc.) with an AntiVirus-Solution in the design of AVAST 4.8 ... and that all running on a PC with 256 or 512 MB of RAM on a 8 GB Harddisk under a P-III-Processor. THEN switching to newer systems would not be a big question – but only then!

And because the XP computer I do have would choke on Windows 7 and it is fine for all my needs, I will be moving to Linux land.  ;D

Stay safe?  Not if XP continues to be put on the internet and security weaknesses are exploited to create massive botnets after support ends in April.  Not going to happen, that we're going to stay safe.  It's hairy enough as it is, but it will be worse after April if XP is not removed for personal and safety reasons.  Businesses are migrating away because because of that, and they don't want to lose monies by being penny wise and pound foolish.  As of now, XP is still at 27% usage out of all os's with only five months of support left.

OS percentage should diminish rapidly just after April as businesses should almost be done with XP by then.  [EDIT:]  If not, that is because they are willing to pay Microsoft for extended support coverage, something the common user does not have access to.

But what is really scary is how many computers in China and India will still be running XP after April. My understanding is that some companies will have real trouble migrating because many of their web applications need IE6 that will not run on other browsers.

That has been my BIG problem. I simply could not get to the registration window - to enter a code I got by email. Very sad. It froze the machine every single time, for days and days. I had to give up.

And yes - give us something that is NOT LIKE Windows 8, not even like 8.1 and I will think about it for my XP machine. 8 (adn 8.1) is beyond awful. But the 2000 one won't take even XP - it is just too old and creaky ! The next machine I buy will be a mac. I have had it with Windows.
