Mail scan icon won't go away
« on: June 09, 2005, 01:38:59 PM »
This is a newly acquired problem, actually more of an annoyance.  The Avast mail scan icon sometimes does not go away when Avast is done scanning e-mail. Is this a bug or a bad setting?

Win Xp/Sp2 all updates
Thunderbird 1.0.2
Avast version 4.6.665
Vps: version 0523-5

How ashMaiSv.exe (avast! e-Mail Scanner Service) is set to start?
Check Start > Control Panel > Administrative tools > Services

Does this happen with other email program? Like Outlook Express?
Are you using any other spam killer? Are you receiving a large (big) email with attached files?

Mail scanner set as Manual and is curretly Started

MailWasher Pro is used to filter e-mail. No big messages are in process. BTW the Icon has been showing for a couple of hours.

Only use Thunderbird.

Moving the cursor over the Icon shows
optonline.svc.highwinds-media.com, grc.com

grc.com is a newsgroup, not sure about the other although it is appears to be my Cable ISP's news server

Ok, it's right.

The process is not being 'finished' or 'killed' correctly.
If you close MailWasher, does it disapear?
If you close Thunderbird?
After boot, does the problem persist?

Close both TBird and MailWasher--No joy

Stop Avast's On Access Protection --ICON gone

Restart OnAccess Protection followed by starting Mailwasher -- Icon shows, then dissappears

The following two items appear to be repetitive
Restart Thunderbird then expand News.grc.com(click on plus sign th show status of subscribed groups on server), Icon shows and does not go away. At this point I've not attempted to read any messages

Close Thunderbird -- this time Icon dissappears

Also above occurs with the other news.group. Note closing newsgroup without closing T'Bird and the Icon stays.

Getting e-mail works properly Icon shows then dissappears

Rebooted the system and the problem persists.

One other interesting observation: Neither the Mail Shield or Standard Shield counter increments when opening the news group when the icon shows.

Seems to be a problem into News scanner or yours settings.
Maybe if Alwil team could help us here...

The icon should stay on for as long as you have an nntp connection to the news server, whether you are reading anything or not.  If you put the cursor over the icon, it should display the name of the server, multiple names if multiple connections open.  This also happens with IMAP mail connections, since they also keep the server connection up.  Icon will not go away until you kill the connections, which with TB requires termination (with other newsreaders, like Agent for example, you can just go offline and the icon disappears).  I also use Mailwasher Pro, TB 1.02, XP Pro SP2.

This must be something that occurred with the latest release. I've been using Thunderbird and Mozilla with Avast for quite some time, and until recently never encountered this behavior.

Thank you for the enlightenment and reply.

Maybe something new in TB1.02 news?  I don't use TB as a newsreader, but is has occurred all along with Agent and with TB IMAP mail.

It's Avast that changed on my system a few days ago. Never noticed this behavior until this release.  Version 4.6.665 dated May 22, 2005

Another interesting bit of information.

When opening Newsgroup Secnews.Netscape.Com which uses port 563, the Avast Ball spins, but the mail icon *never* appears.  Why?

Icon won't appear unless you are scanning (redirecting) port 563, and avast! can'tdo that because it is encrypted.  Check under Standard Shield to see if there is a .dll or such loaded to support the access, which would be scanned by avast!  There should be, because of ssl.
