I am sorry you are having issues with Avast.

I am not connected to Avast, just another person who has their Internet Security installed on both of my computers. Perhaps I can help you with your questions.

There is a Avast Repair option in the Add/Remove programs in your computer.

Click on "Start", find "Control Panel" and click on it. A new window will open. Scroll down until you see Programs, click on it.  Another panel will open up, you should see at the top Programs and Features, click on it and finally another panel will open up.  Scroll down until you see Avast Internet Security, once you find it, right click it (hover your mouse over it will say Uninstall/Change.  Once you click it another panel will be shown from Avast.  Their will be several options for you to choose from.  On the left side there will be shown the following.  Update, Change, Repair, and Uninstall.  Click on REPAIR and follow the instructions.  This should fix any issues you have with Avast.

Please let me know if this fixes your issues.

I do hope you upgraded Avast FIRST to 2014 before upgrading to Win 8.1. If not, most likely Avast would have deleted itself/files gone corrupt. You'll have to do a clean install:

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.
5. Install the version you downloaded.
6. Reboot.

You can insert license file during install or after reboot. (If using paid version)
Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

This is not Rejzors tool. Both links are for the official uninstall tool.
