Corrupt download of Avast!
« on: November 11, 2013, 01:09:28 AM »
Hi there,

I've just reset my system and upgraded to Windows 8.1. After installing Avast! I've been having major issues with it.

First things first- I can't use Avast or any of it's features, it says I'm unprotected- the avast service is off, self defense is off and it won't allow me to resolve the errors. It even refuses me to update the software. I have also tried to uninstall Avast! So I can try again with a fresh install, unfortunately it refuses to uninstall.

So I'm left without protection, the Avast software is refusing to uninstall or do anything at all.

It's also causing my system to slow.

I appreciate any help, thank you all in advance.

I have attached a photo to this thread, it's one of many dialogues that keep popping up when I try to resolve the issues.

I do hope you upgraded Avast FIRST to 2014 before upgrading to Win 8.1. If not, most likely Avast would have deleted itself/files gone corrupt. You'll have to do a clean install:

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup.exe

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.
5. Install the version you downloaded.
6. Reboot.

You can insert license file during install or after reboot. (If using paid version)

Hello Alikhan,

I installed Avast! after I upgraded to Windows 8, there was no existing installation of Avast on my system. I have taken your advice and managed to remove Avast and am currently trying a fresh install.

Thank you very much for your reply!

Unfortunately it's done exactly the same thing as before, it's completely unusable. :l

Uh, I feared that...

Then I'd assume you need to run this installer (online version).

Reason being sometimes the offline installer doesn't work.

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_online.exe

Exact same steps but this installer. (You need to be online during this install). It has worked in the past for cases like this.

Thank you very much for your help Alikhan, that sorted it! Second time using these forums and brilliant support both times, one of many reasons why I choose Avast over any other.

Thank you so much for your time, I really appreciate it!

Are you able to send us the broken offline installer? If this is not a simple broken download, we should get this sorted out.

I have also seen this issue mentioned more than once but we still didn't identify the cause. There are many reason why you wouldn't extract htmlayout.dll. I would be inclined to blame it on incomplete download but it's also possible that somebody uploaded wrong SFX to our hosting partners. Do I understand correctly that once downloaded, that exact installer either always works or is always broken?

Yes, that's correct, it works or is broken. But it's NOT an incomplete download, that's for certain.
