new program edition updated fine but...

I hit a few snags downloading the recent program update for Avast Internet Security on my Windows XP Sp3 PC but UI is completed.  However my virus definition updates are not working.  Tried to manually update virus definitions and it said they were updated, but it showed yesterday's (11/12) as most recent along with an error message.  The error message said "error unknown".
Any ideas??

Repair avast!:
1. Control Panel -> Add/Remove programs -> avast!
2. Click on 'Repair'.
3. Follow instructions.
4. Reboot.

Thank you Asyn---  done and working fine.  So simple, yet sometimes when Microsoft, Adobe, Firefox and Avast all have updates within days of one another... I get rattled.
