So often that Avast is causing problems after Windows Updates...
« on: November 13, 2013, 11:44:59 PM »
I see this problem more and more. Especially after patch Tuesdays.

1) You install all the updates available from Microsoft.
2) You reboot the computer as per request of the update.
3) Computer reboots and then hangs on Windows starting.

To resolve the problem you have to do the following:
1) Boot in to save mode command line only.
2) Move all the asw*.* related files in c:\windows\system32\drivers to another folder, or delete them.
3) Reboot the computer in to normal mode.
4) After login in normal mode (which was not possible before).
5) Uninstall Avast.
6) Reboot computer.
7) Reinstall Avast from Internet or other location.
8) Computer is fine again.

I have seen this problem with both the Free and the Internet Security version.

Anybody seeing this problem more and more?

It's not avast... it's most antivirus.  It's a known issue on Microsoft support.  They recommend disabling the anti virus when you install windows updates

... No, that's bad security advice. Do NOT disable it during Windows Updates. The first thing before you connect to the internet is an antivirus... If you've already done a clean install (seems so), is the problem still there or is reoccurring per release?

Windows 10 Home 64-bit • Avast Free (latest stable version) •  Malwarebytes 4 Premium (On-Demand) • Windows Firewall Control • Google Chrome • LastPass • CCleaner • O&O ShutUp10 •

Not bad advice... you are downloading directly from Microsoft... if you don't trust them you might as well turn your computer off now and be done with it.  There is not going to be any security breach unless you remain on the internet for any extended length of time and surf to a website.  Quit drinking the Kool Aid... they've got you paranoid

I had problems of freeze when downloading or installing windows updates. I have apparently solved them by unchecking the updates of windows antivirus. But I have not succeeded in completely suppressing the Windows antivirus...
