I've been trying to solve this problem for weeks before I finally decided to try removing some non-essential clients/services from my network adaptors.  Soon as I disabled the "Avast Firewall driver" for my each adapter, my audio stuttering disappeared.

I disabled the firewall (from within Avast's settings) shortly after switching to Premier, so I've never actually had the shield running and still experienced the audio stutter, until I disabled the "avast firewall driver" network service.

It's been a month since someone from Avast answered here. Therefore bump.

I got same issue after updating to Win10 - audio shutters etc.

Disabled firewall and everything is fine now.

Fix it guys.

Thanks for your description of the problem. We moved the problematic parts of code from DPC to passive level. Our tests looks right. The fix will be in the next version.

when will be that introduced into public build?

I've had the same issue appear in Windows 10 64-bit on one PC but not on the other.

I've been a paid user of Avast Pro for some time and sure enough, a test uninstall resolved all my DPC latency problems.

Interesting that after so much time, this issue still occurs and a pity too because up until now, I had been very happy with Avast.

Will test again with only Antivirus installed and report if any improvement.

Thanks to the original poster for helping me resolve an issue that has been driving me nuts for weeks!

Just wanted to drop by and say THANK YOU!

I have been having this DPC latency issue for almost 2 years now!!! I didn't find out about it being DPC latency until last thanksgiving when i finally got fed up with restarting my computer before each session (and about every 2 or 3 hours to keep it stutter-free)

Played around for awhile with LatencyMon and DPC Checker, and have been researching my top culprit (ndis.sys) for the last 2 weeks. Just came across this thread after searching for a possible relation to avast and ndis.sys, and modified my installation to exclude the firewall. Had DPC Checker running the entire time and watched my red bars completely vanish!!! Haven't restarted yet, but will do so soon and leave it running for awhile.

So far, my top highest executions on LatencyMon are dxgkrnl.sys, USBPORT.SYS, and nvlddmkm.sys, so 2 graphics related drivers and a USB driver. but nothing has broken the 1.0(ms) mark yet, which is a MAJOR improvement, and even with small spikes (still in the green on checker) I've had smooth audio/video playback while browsing the web and using utorrent.

By the way, I went as far as to disable my onboard NIC (realtek) and bought a TP-LINK ethernet adaptar, brand new with most recent drivers, and nothing changed prior to uninstalling avast's firewall.

OS is Windows 7 here, so the issue is not just isolated to a specific windows version. I've seen complaints with ndis.sys on 7, 8, 8.1, and 10 so far. Wondering if everyone was running avast...

@ Daniel790,
For your information I'm using Avast free and the firewall within windows 10.
I've reported this topic to Avast. Let's see if they have an answer.

I'm actually using Avast Premier, and have been a paid subscriber for 2 years now (how I didn't put two and two together long ago baffles me now that I've ironed out this issue). While I don't really need the use of avast's firewall, since I also have windows firewall active and my router also has it's own firewall functions built in, I still feel as though I'm paying for a program with a feature I can't use.

Does this mean I will uninstall and leave avast behind? Never, not unless the AV core program itself ever causes issues. But so far avast has saved me from malicious websites, infected files, and has been the best AV I've tried over the years.

This is likely one reason this issue hasn't been given the attention it deserves... But alas... I will keep on chugging along without avast firewall and enjoy my system stability once again. I was on the verge of just building a whole new rig....

I can't believe this was it! I was about to roll-back to windows 8.1 because of this but I thought, after searching for solutions for HOURS, "hmm, yesterday I upgraded to avast premium which has a firewall". Googled "avast+DPC" and the thread was here. I was also using LatencyMon to monitor this and I though the culprit were the nvidia drivers, but no, it's avast! Jesus... and this thread is 6 pages long! I feel like I should get a refund just for this crap!

I'm just here to say that I've had this DCP issue and media stutter for months, and I just managed to solve it by uninstalling Avast.
Xonar DG audio, and an integrated and BIOS disabled Realtek in my system.
I can't confirm if the normal non-firewall avast causes this problem too or not, since i was using the trial with the firewall. Simply clicking disable firewall didn't solve the problem for me.

This issue still exists in the current version of Avast premium. After uninstalling the firewall component of the software (and switching to another simple third party firewall) the issues went away completely.

Most users restart their machine about once a day so won't notice the issue, and those who don't will probably only notice it as an "audio stutter" problem, as that is the most obvious and exaggerated symptom; however these 'latency spikes' caused by Avast actually affect all usage on the PC, not only applications with audio. It's a little more obvious to the eye when you're accustomed using a beefy high end gaming rig that has no problem with almost any software or game thrown at it.

Even though it might be missing some features for a premium application, I liked the Avast firewall, and will probably return to using it in the future sometime after they squish the bugs.
