Convincing a friend to seek help from the forums...
« on: November 27, 2013, 01:19:26 PM »
I have this friend who recently got a nasty infection on his computer. I don't really know him personally, just over the net through Steam.

Apparently every time he clicks something a pop-up with some random ad in it shows up. So I ran him through the ropes and had him try scanning his computer with Avast, Malwarebytes and Super Anti Spyware (all tools I use and am familiar with) but after all the scanning and finding a number of trojan infections, and at least trying to clean them, he still can't get rid of it. My guess is this is going to call for more serious help from the forums, or maybe even reformatting his hard-drive. Something beyond my knowledge anyway.

He's young, impatient and foolish (if he wasn't, he probably wouldn't have gotten infected in the first place). I've laid out the options for him, and he sees making a thread here or reformatting as too much hassle. I'm not exactly sure how to convince him of the severity of the situation, seeing as it just frustrates him and he tries to change the subject every time.

Actually this really kinda reminds me of how a lot of people are in their lives. Unless a problem is a quick and easy fix, they just decide to leave it and let it get worse until it blows up in their face.

Any suggestions? Or y'know, just generally talk about how people are bullheaded and such. ::)

This is about as hard to do as convincing someone to break a bad habit.  (Drinking, drugs, etc)
They always have to make the first move. Without that first commitment, change and/or improvement never happens. :)

It seems your friend has two choices...A working computer or a non-working computer.
One choice is good the other not good.

When your friend cannot use his computer maybe he will get the message.  ::)
