Problem after upgrade
« on: December 01, 2013, 05:43:45 PM »
I am using Mozilla Firefox on Windows XP Home SP3 and Avast Free for several years.

Everything has been absolutely fine until I upgraded Avast Free a few days ago.

Now, when I try to use some of my older programs, I get, not a normal CTD, but a desktop without any icons or anything else.  Using Task Manager, I am unable to end the programs and the only way to recover is to switch power off and reboot.

I've tried 2 system restores without success, and have found that the only way to run the programs is to right-click the Avast icon to disable the shields which is not really very satisfactory and defeats the object of using anti-virus.

The programs are old but serve their purpose very well so I don't wish to have to upgrade them as well because I don't even use all the bells and whistles which they contain.

The programs are.... MS Visual Basic 5.0, MS Money 98, MS Office 2000.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.  Thanks

After reading a lot of previous posts here, I tried adding the program folders to the exclusion list, and everything now works as before.
