I updated my Avast! software to version 9.0.1501, re-started the computer (running Windows XP) with the following result: normal 'FOXCONN' image, normal BIOS routine, followed normal Windows 'wavy flag' logo, then the mouse pointer which can be moved about the screen for about 2 seconds. The pointer freexes, the computer briefly stops video output to monitor (as when shutting down), but re-commences the start-up routine. This loop continues ad infinitum.
Computer can be booted up in safe mode, and system restored to previous good state. However Avast! (version 8.0.1501) refuses to update virus definitions.
Has anybody else encountered this problem? I suspect that the problem lies within version 9.0.1501.

You should not update, but do a clean install of version 9.
Use avastclear to remove the current installation, than install version 9 from scratch.
That should solve the problem.
Keep in mind though that version 9 is a RC2 Beta release and not (yet) a final version.
