Can't turn on shields in Avast Free
« on: December 04, 2013, 08:18:46 AM »
Yesterday I updated to Avast Free 2014. Soon afterward a message popped up with the yellow exclamation point warning sign saying some shields are off. There are two buttons to push, one that says Turn On another that says Resolve all. I have tried clicking both. When I do so, absolutely nothing happens. What could the problem be?

try avast repair

controlpanel > ad/remove programs > avast > uninstall/change > repair option .... wait a minute and reboot

did that work?

Tried that, didn't work. Still get the same messsage "some shields are off" and when I click 'Turn on' or 'Resolve' nothing happens.

Also as an added bonus when I rebooted the system I got this nice little error message. (Translated loosely from Spanish: "The file system structure of the disk is damaged. Run the Chkdisk programa in C:"

Looking back through the registry this happened approximately a million times this morning when I booted the computer. Don't know if this has anything to do with the Avast problem or if it's just coincidence.

Any ideas? In the meantime it looks like I'll be shutting this down and switching to my wife's computer this morning...

So I ran chkdisk and after a long time running it told me everything was clear. I still have the error message from Avast about the shields. What should I do?

No apparent reason why Avast is experiencing this so ..

Download Avast Uninstall Utility to your Desktop.
Download the correct version of Avast
Avast Free
Avast Pro
Avast Internet Security
Avast Premier
Disconnect from the net
Uninstall Avast via control panel

  • Run the uninstall tool and accept the reboot to safe mode
  • Once complete reboot your system
  • Reinstall Avast

So i followed all the steps: downloaded the Uninstall utility and Avast Free, disconnected from the internet, uninstalled Avast from the control panel.

However, when I ran the uninstall tool and clicked to reboot into safe mode, my machine wouldn't boot and went straight into Startup Repair.

Assuming Im able to get the machine started again, should I try to run the Uninstall tool again or what?

Startup repair says it 'cannot repair this computer automatically'. Uh oh.

Maybe the problem with Avast is just due to my hardware being really messed up?
