How do I turn of Avast temporarily?

Hi,, I'm having trouble installing Windows 8.1 from 8 and one of the suggestions is that I temporarily turn off my (Free) Avast! Antivirus and Firewall.. How do I do that please?.. regards Dogger

Right click avast tray icon....pause shields
