Avast 2014 causing BSOD?
« on: December 07, 2013, 10:02:17 PM »
Since updating to the latest Avast realise I've regularly been getting the dreaded Blue screen of death
Now I've used Avast fr many years without a problem and like the program but at the moment I just can''t use it

My Laptop is Acer with i3 330m processor 4gb RAM initially I did not connect Avast with the problem and did the usual checks to file system drivers RAM etc all checked out OK

But it was still crashing  I Googled the problem and downloaded a crash dump analyzer which pointed to Avast

This is what I did - see reply to other poster

I want to go back to Avast has anyone any suggestions

Please provide more information.
- What is the exact bsod error?
- What OS/service pack are you using?
- What exact version of avast are you using?
- Any other security software installed (or had installed)?
- Any other problems with the system?

- What is the exact bsod error?  It has cleared now but I used 'Blue screen view' which isolated Avast
- What OS/service pack are you using? Win 7.0 Sp1 (all up to date)
- What exact version of avast are you using? Latest version 9.XXX (I have had to uninstall but always allowed latest version)
- Any other security software installed (or had installed)? Comodo firewall - this has co-existed with Avast for over 3 years since I have had the PC
- Any other problems with the system? No none I always make sure PC is in top condition

Since uninstalling Avast and replacing it (hopefully temporarily) with AVG the have been no BSOD's and system is running fine

Five days on still no further BSOD

Is something going wrong? Avast has always been great as an AV but when I logged onto my other PC with Avast it worked fine but has become a real nag what with' your system updates are CRITICAL'' - to me not to have the very latest version of Foxit reader is hardly critical - then when that's gone another popup about some ''special offer blah blah blah''

Avast AV is very good but I hope it doesn't go the way of so may others and try to be too clever

Well, all software updates can be critical because they often fix security issues.
That goes also for FoxIt reader.

If you don't want to get the alert you can disable the software updater within avast.

Yes true Eddy but most programs will report an update, and the risk from opening a PDF file is comparatively low compared to a malicious file or execution of a malicious script from the net

My point was Avast has allegedly caused my BSOD yet there seems no fix - also today my friends PC stopped connecting to the internet after installing the latest Avast update - I was there fortunately at the time, the wireless adapter just wouldn't connect and wouldn't then find a wireless network I had to remove Avast then the wireless PCI wireless card, reboot machine restart and install driver from the original CD

Before I uninstalled Avast the wireless card was not working properly - now it is I have seen exactly the same over the last two weeks on separate XP machines each with Avast- each time the owners bought new PC's now I'm wondering if there could be a link?

1. Download Avastclear, Rejzors uninstall tool and the appropriate Avast program edition

Note : You need to be ONLINE during the install (sometimes online installer works whereas offline doesn't)

http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_free_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_internet_security_setup_online.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avast_premier_antivirus_setup_online.exe

Avastclear : http://files.avast.com/iavs9x/avastclear.exe
Rejzors Uninstall tool: http://rejzor.wordpress.com/avast-cleanup-tool/

2. Uninstall Avast by control panel  [If you don't have Avast in control Panel go to #4]
3. Uninstall in safe mode using Avastclear.
4. Run Rejzors Uninstall Utility in Normal Mode (removes traces avastclear doesn't) - reboot.
5. Install the version you downloaded.
6. Reboot.
