Strange. ??? I have no problems and no crashes and as you can see, OnlineSecurity is turned on:

What else is running and what are your settings in IE ???
Are you running the latest beta of avast! ???

Maybe it has something to do with Enhanced Protection Mode?

I have the same problem, so I believe it to be system specific.  I have disabled enhanced mode.. disabled all addons yet it still crashes ..  Oh well I can live without that :)

Enhanced Protection mode was off, but I can double check that...

No other security software installed

Windows Defender 8.1 Disabled

(only other security program is Malwarebytes Free version)

Latest beta version installed on 8.1 2014.9.0.2010

Willing to do one more clean install if need be

IE 11 Security settings are Default Medium-High, and Enable Protected Mode Checked in there, and Enhanced Protected mode unchecked....

I believe it to be system specific as I have done several clean installs, reset IE to default, disabled all add ons bar AOS (including system ones)  and still get the same result

ok Thank you Essex, I'll just live without the feature in that case, and enjoy being protected by Avast Antivirus still...

Thank you everyone for replying though, do appreciate it

@bikemanAMD, what are crash details?  I noticed Win8.1 is not showing the detailed crash information - I had to go to Admin Tools/Event Viewer.  I am seeing failures in combase.dll (I recall the error was 0x00000005).  I had no problems for the first 5 days of running avast! Pro 2014 and Win8.1.  I started getting crashes after installing the Google Search add-on and also Google Toolbar, although uninstalled these did not seem to help.  I am working with avast! on a problem related to IE and automatic configuration scripts  that seemed Win7 specific.  Disabling this feature cut the number of crashes dramatically on Win8.1 but they still pop up periodically.  When I get through the list of more serious problems, I will take a closer look.

I am having this same problem with the combination of Windows 8.1 and IE 11.  IE crashes as soon as you first try to load a page.  This computer was restored to a fresh Windows 8 install yesterday.  All updates and Windows 8.1 were applied.  Added some tools and Avast.  Not much reason to look for other interactions.

I ran >sfc /scannow
"Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."

This is the IE error from the Event Viewer:
