Web Shield is killing my bandwidth
« on: December 18, 2013, 04:44:50 PM »
First off the bat, I've scanned in both normal and safe-mode with avast and malwarebytes, and do not have anything.

Basically, ever since the update, Web Shield is absolutely killing my bandwidth. I can't watch a YouTube video for more than ten seconds without it having to buffer and after that, it won't even stream and of the rest of the video.

After loads of different testing I did on my own (different routers, noise margin test, speedtests, test sockets), I had the idea to turn off Web Shield to see if that was causing the problem. The problem was solved straight and I had my regular bandwidth back.

So basically, is anyone else getting this and what the hell is going on with Web Shield avast!

What is your OS? - 7 ultimate 64 bit
Any other security software? - malwarebytes
Firewall? - Only Windows firewall on and that's not supposed to be a problem with avast! (I heard)

just some info ....
Malwarebytes is not designed for safemode scanning, safe mode should only be used if normal scan does not work
It will work in safe mode, but all drivers are not loaded and therfor crippled....

You are correct the windows firewall isn't an issue.
How did you update you avast, through the GUI or a clean install?

Have you tried a repair...Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click "avast">click "repair">reboot (it might take more than one reboot)

That's more than true, but I like to do both just to be sure. It always kept me out of trouble anyway  :)

Did the repair, no such luck I'm afraid :(

I install updates through the UI yes.

Uninstalled, rebooted, cleared registry with CCleaner, installed avast again - still the same problem :/

I think I'm just going to disable Web Shield at this point. I know this solves the problem, so I see it as my only option at the moment. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future update. As I said before, I've scanned with both normal and safe mode with avast and malwarebytes and there's nothing. Clearly a very small problem that doesn't affect many people, but I'm unfortunately one of them :(

It sounds as if there is something else going on.
Be patient as a malware expert will catch up to you.
Sorry I couldn't help you more but there is definitely something
else going on.

It's not a malware problem.

Which previous security solutions did you have installed.?

Have you gone into computer management and then device manager and removed phantom network drivers.
This worked wonders for me.

You can try disabling new webshield (so it will be back to normal e.g old technology):

Go to C:\programdata\avast software\avast,
Find WebShield.ini, add the following lines:

[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

Restart PC. You may need to disable avast self defense (Settings - Troubleshooting).
