why avast 9 have 3 different window for VPS update ?
« on: December 21, 2013, 02:03:45 PM »
avast 9.0.2011 free
-----------------------------------------------
Most of the user prefer manual update instead of auto.
I myself did the same.

User can update VPS/program via-

method 1--> [image 1]
avast ui>>settings>>update

method 2--> [image 2]
right click on avast tray icon and select update

method 3--> [image 2]
just make a shortcut on home and click it

I have posted image 3 here too. it is a separate window.
How to get this window ?
Just place these shortcut on home (avast ui >>status)--> "virus chest" and "update"
Now click on virus chest tile (don't close virus chest window yet), now click on "update" tile
see what; virus update window has turned into update window. :o
Now close virus chest window, and click on virus chest tile again , it will not open virus chest. ???
Try yourself and tell, is this normal or a bug?

thanks!! :D

I don't know how you come to that conclusion ??? most prefer their VPS updates to be automatic.

Personally, I think it could go either way. As for myself, I love to disable everything that updates in the background since my desktop has one core.

I agree with ank91. I do not believe in having different designs for the same event.

So you don't even use the streaming updates ??? updating uses next to no resources and by doing the updates manually means you are already behind in protection, personal preference is not the discussion here as ank91 thinks the majority of users prefer manual updates and that is rubbish.

This is why VPS are set to auto as that is the best protection level which covers the majority of users who prefer the auto setting for VPS update

As for the main question about why three different update windows, there isn't! there maybe different ways of getting to the update window but there is only one window ( interface ).

Actually, avast! is one of the few programs that I let update. I was just speaking in a general sense and I know that many others disable certain things to speed up older computers as well. :)

Regarding the main issue of the topic, there is no reason to have 3 different design patterns for the one update event. As shown in the OP, it would confuse the user more than benefit.

Edit: Look at craigb's response; didn't think about it that way.

I agree that there is no need for 3 separate ways of accessing the updates window but being that most people are having a hard time navigating/finding the UI options then 3 ways of getting there may help some to eventually find it ;) personally I think all option routes would be best placed in the right click menu of the avast ball in tray.

I have, as mentioned they are all the same screen with 3 different ways of getting there.

Screen 2 is still the same screen but being that you have updated from the tray you get the blue "UPDATE" title.

Sorry, yes now I have been able to reproduce it and it wont change back to the correct virus chest screen ( strange ) I wonder if a reboot cures this  ???

A reboot does fix it :) it is a small bug but at the same time your probably meant to close the first window before opening another 8)

Ok, make sure to supply a link to this topic which will make it easier to explain rather than going through the whole process again and as I see it the 3rd screen is the only issue here.
