Windows Xp black screen flowing update of Avast to 2014

Please help

I hope this is in the right place but the replies to other peoples black screens are difficult for me to understand.

I have just updated my Avast version to 2014 and now I get a black screen. CTR+ALT +Del does not do any thing. Initially there was a brief warning which I said yes to the 1st time I booted up. So I shut down and booted again and and got the same avast warning but this time I said no to the warning. Now when I restart the computer no warning just black screen with the mouse working. Please help. I have limited computer knowledge

Hi

Thanks for the reply. I did not clearly get to see the warning. However I have been able to boot to safe mode and return to a previous restore point. Thank heavens.......However when I look at Avast software it says you need to reboot the PC for the changes to take place. This I did from the start programs menue and thankfully the pc came back on. When I checked the Avast again it still says its waiting to re-boot for changes to take place. What should I do. There is a drop down menu on the Avast screen saying to re start. I don't want to press this in case I get the same problem.

You need to reboot in order for all of the changes to take effect.

I have just used the Avast remover tool and re installed version 2014 - same problem again will remove Avast again and try an older version

Can you tell me where I can download an older version 2013 as the installer automatically looks for the 2014 version which does not work on my PC

Which version of avast! are you using ?  (Free, pro, etc.)

I am using the free version. I have just managed to install my old application which was 7.0.1474 and it did not black screen. It is updating at the moment but not the program part just the virus part if that makes sense.

VPS updates are automatic. Program updates are manual.
You'll probably get a notice that there is a program update available but you have to request the update.
What other security programs are you running ?

I don't have any other security programs running apart from windows firewall.

At the moment I have managed to get it on an even keel with the older version. I will wait till it no longer updates with my current version before moving to try 2014 again. Clearly there are a lot of issues with the 2014 version judging by the forums, so I will wait to see if they make any changes to the version as the year progresses.

When you consider that Avast has over 200,000,000 users, the number of complaints are actually very small.
That doesn't lessen the importance of fixing the problems for those that have a problem.
It usually turns out to be an incompatibility with another program or a driver.
We all have different setups so the variations are uncountable.
