Next silly question.......how do I know which type of Java I have? and if I have the wrong one, how do I change it....

Well, it does not seem to be the out-of-box Microsoft Java VM at least (Technically, there is only Sun java but I think this makes the story rather longish).  So, I guess you have Sun Java 2 Standard Edition somehow.  Considering that you enjoy "net entertainment" often, I think the update is necessity.  Please do as the Italian says.

You can always go to http://www.java.com and get the latest version by clicking on the button



On a slightly different note, does anyone know if http://joeq.sourceforge.net is in anyway similar to Sun's JAVA VM and can I use joeq instead of the Sun offerring?

You have an old version of Java installed (1.5.0_2) which has a security vulnerability. You need to download the latest version (1.5.0_3) here:

I think…that version is only available in English at the moment. 

O.K. Frank, I have a question this time around, then.  Do I need to uninstall Microsoft JVM as well?

I have already done my homework and I know how to uninstall it.

1.Start>Run>cmd

RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection java.inf,UnInstall

Say yes to the question and restart the computer.

2.Delete the Folder and Files below

WINDOWS\java
WINDOWS\inf\java.pnf
WINDOWS\system32\jview.exe
WINDOWS\system32\wjview.exe

3.Start Regedit and Delete the keys below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Java VM
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\AdvancedOptions\JAVA_VM

My question is, do we need to do this?

Hi Umath,

There is an automated tool to remove all traces of MS JVM, available from the link below.

To test if you have JVM, go to Start>Run>Cmd and type jview.

(If it says not recognised, then you haven't.)

If you have it, the important thing is to make sure that it is build 3810, because previous versions have major security holes.

As to whether to remove it completely... On the one hand, if you have any applications on your computer that depend on JVM, they might stop working. On the other hand, JVM is only being supported up to 2007, so after that time any security problems won't be fixed and having it around will be a liability.

The choice is yours...

Oh, and by the way, watch out for JVM coming back to your system if you install older programs because they might require JVM and install an older, insecure version, putting your security at risk!

Thank you for the quick reply, Frank.  I've got the info above from this site but your links are more informative.

Now that I uninstalled the old JVMs thanx to your help, I'd wait for the latest version of Sun JVM suites my OS' language.  I use many English apps including Avast! (different from Kamulko! ) but JVM is way too integrated to the system.
