I've updated to the new 1.5.2 -b09 version, (apparently the latest one I can get when I run the update) but what's the scoop on removing older versions?
I remember reading somewhere (I think it may have been on Java's website) that you should keep the old versions unless you're low on disk space because they might contain pieces that the new version will draw on to use.  Others say it's best to remove the old versions (Freewheelin Frank in an earlier post said they might even be a security issue).
I still have 1.4.2-03 and 1.4.2-06 showing up in my program files and in my Add/Remove.  Is it best to get rid of them?

It's essential!

The older versions have security holes and leave you computer open to attack, even if you have the latest version installed, because the writer of a Java applet (program) can specify which version to use to run the program.

For example, the writer writes a line of code which says:

"Use version 1.4.2 if present on computer"

The applet will then ignore 1.5.x and use 1.4.2 to infect your machine.

No new version of Java depends on an older version, so you can safely remove them.

I downloaded the new version as per instructions sent to me by Susz (from FF)
I installed.
In the Intall/Uninstall section I noticed I had 3 different Javas.  I successfully deleted 2 of them.  When I tried to delete the 3rd, I got the below message.
I tried to look for it but just found all sorts of Java stuff.  (The download for the l.4 is sitting in a folder on my desktop from previous times)

Help in deleted the old java is appreciated.

Hi Emma,

You probably have a version conflict. Try uninstalling the latest version of Java, and see if you can then uninstall the earlier version. Normally it is possible to remove the earlier version after installing the new one, but it seems there is a problem with Windows Installer Service jamming up when multiple versions of a program are installed.

I found a 'Windows Installer CleanUp Utility' on the MS web site, so if the advice above doesn't work, we can try that and it should fix it.

I uninstalled all the #5 and tried to get rid of the 1.4.  Some other messages appeared.
I downloaded the MS uninstaller but have done nothing with it.(expect put it in a corner of the desktop where I won't lose it)

Hi Emma,

Did you get the MS program from here?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;290301

I just downloaded and installed it on my computer. No problem. You have to go to Start>All Programs because it doesn't put an icon on the desktop.

Upon opening the program (Windows Install Claen Up) you get a very simple program interface listing  the programs in Add/Remove.

Find the Java line and right click on it. (It should be highlighted in blue.)

The remove button should become active at the bottom of the screen.

Click on the remove button.

Exit the program. (You can uninstall it from Add/Remove)

Check in add/Remove that all installations of Java have gone and reinstall the latest version.

With any luck this should fix it!

That script in your code which shows the ISP of the person reading your post is
something that really isn't used on this forum.
It's been talked about many times before. I know, I used to have it in my signature. ;D
