Getting BSOD, and told that Avast could be causing them.
« on: December 31, 2013, 09:28:23 PM »
Hi, i've been using free Avast 2014 for a while. I've been getting BSOD on startup sometimes and i think they started happening after i instaled Avast and free Comodo.

I've got some mini dumps and the like from 'SF Diagnostic Tool' if anyone knows how to read them?...

I posted them to www.sevenforums.com and he said it was a WiFi driver, which ive updated, but that Avast was showing up as being a problem too. I dont really want to switch back to Avira if i can help it.

Cheers

This tool from NirSoft is helpful in determining what specifically caused it...

Yeah, i saw that in anouther post and downloaded it, but i dont understand how it works lol. I cant handle the gibberish computers come out with, it'd be way simpler to show the mini dumps to someone who actually understands all that stuff..

Not that difficult...

Open the minidump with the program, and click View > HTML Report - All Items.

Post the report here in your thread.

BSOD has been reported many times with this latest version... just read the subject titles.  Basically there is no fix right now.

Life is not always "all or nothing".  Consider deconfiguring some of the Avast features if they're causing you problems.

For example, uninstall, then reinstall and uncheck some of the "Tools" they offer.  The shields are really the most important part of the product.

Don't know what else I can offer other than to state that I've been using Avast since 2005 and I haven't had one blue screen from it.  Regardless of what some other posters may have said, it's not a foregone conclusion it's going to crash your system.  I honestly suspect something else is doing it.

You may need to use a screen capture program to convert the HTML report to a .jpg file.

The free ScreenshotCaptor works well.

When posting, click on the "Attachments and other options" link, and under the "Attach:" section, click on "Browse..." and attach the file.

Click on the minidump file that was created on 12/30 and expand it.

Then create the report and post it.

Those are the properties...you need to open the individual minidump file.
