Unfortunately IE 8 is no longer supported by Avast account. The supported browsers are: IE 9 or higher, Google Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Safari.

Yes I can confirm this, having just tested it with IE8 (which I avoid wherever possible), see image.

The text of which is currently incorrect as it is still supported and gets MS Updates, come April this statement may well be correct as XP is no longer supported and the majority are probably using IE8 because MS disallowed IE9 and above for XP.

I will prepare an override mode, so you will not get blocked in IE8, but I would still strongly recommend to use an alternative browser or perhaps Chrome Frame, that would enable webkit rendering core in Internet Explorer for pages that support it. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I created an override link for the upgrade page and we should have an update this week. I will let you know, once it goes live.

The override is now live. Just click the link on the upgrade browser page and it should not bug you again (as long as you don't delete your cookies).

Honestly  - I think IE8 is going be fine, but with IE6/7 I would not even try.

Will the use of Google Chrome Frame remain a viable solution even after Google stops
support and updates in or soon after January 2014?

Definitely. Webkit rendering is pretty advanced and it would take several years before we could encounter potential rendering issues in Chrome Frame.
