Update or Reinstall of Avast 2014 crashes XP BSOD
« on: January 09, 2014, 04:47:00 PM »
Hello, since the recent update to Avast 2014, My PC was caught in a loop of restart with BSOD. I've restarted in safe mode, cleaned everything, as suggested on two other post from this week, did a clean install, but no succes, just got the BSOD during the clean install process... Is Avast 2014 just incompatible with XP pro SP3?
I posted my minidumps in your ftp incoming
Thanks for any suggestions
Sylvain

I assume that by now you have all the minidumps you need to sort it out no?

So far not impressed, I've uninstall everything avast and currently runnning another antivirus...

 >:( I'm having the same problem. Last night after doing alot of work on my laptop I decided to update my Avast Free 8.0.1489 version to 9.0.1504.
I ran the update before retiring for the evening, when it asked for a reboot, I did and then walked away.
First thing this moring I went to log-on and was greeted with a BSOD. I rebooted again to the same thing; I rebooted into 'Safe Mode' and un-installed Avast. Thinking it was the update that went sideways I downloaded the latest version and installed from a fresh file...I got the BSOD before it even finished installing. I rebooted into 'Safe Mode' again to uninstall it a second time but it never finished, it "wasn't" listed in Add / Remove Programs.
I restored my machine back to yesterday morning before all this happened. So far I'm back up and running fine.
HP laptop, AMD64, 2gigs ram and Window XP pro SP3.

So, is there an issue with the latest update for the Avast Free edition? I do IT work and recommend Avast to everyone (home owners / personal use). If this isn't fixed and everyone I suggested use Avast has this problem... :-[

Personnally I have Zone Alarm as firewall, and I was using Avast for fair bit before... and before I was using Avira.

I have here another XP x64 machine that can't run the new Avast! 2014. Same as others have reported. Have retried on squeaky clean install. Pruned the registry. Intel chip. COMODO firewall. Sorry to have to leave Avast! behind after all these years.

OK Zone Alarm uninstalled, Avast reinstalled, and it seems to be running... so I'm with the choice of running my antivirus OR my firewall?
That's not a very satisfying solutions... Zone Alarm is a very popular firewall, could Avast just make sure that its update is compatible with all the other popular software?

1. Yes, ATM ZA isn't compatible.
2. IDK, but you could use free Comodo FW.

As said IDK, the devs have to decide this.

Do you think this might be reason when I try installing 9.0.2011 on XP SP3 32 with ZA firewall that the reboot after installing as a program update just keeps re-booting XP over and over until I interrupt with the F8 key??

As Asyn had previously stated ZA isn't compatible with avast at the moment so yes it could and probably is the reason your system doesn't function correctly.

Ok, I can stay on 9.0.2008 where all works as in the past and I'll monitor this forum for updates hopefully to come.  Thanks

Your welcome :)

Personally speaking If it were me I would install the latest version of avast for the better protection provided and install a better functioning firewall such as Outpost, Privatefirewall or Comodo, it's your choice though.
