Oh . . . one more question regarding this business of changing browser settings in order to take advantage of the Web Shield:

Is this only necessary for Win9x?  Or is it necessary for WinME, as well?  Or is it necessary all of the time, regardless of the version of Windows? And if so, why aren't instructions for making these changes given during installation of Avast?

Windows ME is considered to be Win9x as well, i.e. yes, the manual setting is needed there too.

yes, ip address 127.0.0.1, port 12080 as before.

I´m using Firefox 1.0.4 browser also (and IE 6 sp1) so do I need to change this option ? Operation system is: Win 2000.

It will work, but Windows 2000 should do a transparent redirect of port 80 (http) to the proxy port (12080) without the change.  Check under webshield/customize to make sure that port is being redirected.

sure that port is being redirected.

Where to chek ? From Internet Backround settings (webshield) ?
These options is very hard to translate to English:

AVAST!
Backround settings-webshield
basic settings:
here you can activate webshield to use:
(manually) direct HTTP ports:  80

Is that the option to change port 80 ?

Hoping this picture helps you understand better what I mean even if it´s in Finnish language!

poonet,

Seems to be O.K.  If you are not sure, just follow the steps below:

Left Click on the Avast! blue tray icon>Web Shield>customize>Advanced(Tab)>Check "Show detailed info on performed action".  Then, start browsing with your browser.  If you see rather annoyingly verbose pop-ups under the title of "Avast! on-access scanner message", your Web Shield is properly working.  To remove the message, of course, uncheck "Show detailed info on performed action."

scaa,

Please read this for starters.
