HI I recently downloaded the lasted Beta version of avast free 2012 to beta test it on my system. This morning I thought I would check out something in the main GUI of avast free so I went to the update tab and clicked on it to check on things.  Then I scrolled down to the Details tab I clicked on it and the tab dropped down and under the Details tab their are two ways for avast to connect to the internet.  The settings are:

I only connect to the Internet using a dial up modem and then it has a white box to put a tick in it.
My computer Is Permanently connected to the internet it has a  box to put a tick into it.- When I try to put a tick in the second internet connection box and push ok to exit the update menu.  Then when I click on settings and then click on the update tab and then click on  Details and then scroll down to the second option to see if the tick remains in the box the tick is gone.  The tick never stays in the box at all unless I put it their in the box when I go back in the update menu the tick is gone from the  box next  to the second connection setting is no longer their.

As far as I can tell all my other settings have not changed at all.  The only thing that has changed is the above setting.

thanks

I will also provide a screen shot

On my system that thing works as advertised.

You could try one or all of the following and see if that helps:
   - "Repair"
   - "Clean Install"
   -   Manually change in "avast5.ini" under "[InetWD]" the item "AssumeAlwaysConnected=0" to read "AssumeAlwaysConnected=1"

@Diddy
Yes, there have been others with the Settings not staying and I believe many were resolved with a 'Repair'.
As jrace mentioned, a clean install is also a possibility(may be needed) if a 'Repair' doesn't resolve the issue. :)

edit: Not to forget this is a Beta ;)

Mine was a clean install since the update function didn't work.
The settings changes also work for me.
My system has also been rebooted since I made the changes described by Diddy.

HI I did do a repair of avast and it did not solve my issue at all.  I did do a complete uninstall and reinstall earlier before I installed this beta on my system.  I think I will possibly wait for a fix to resolve this issue I never feel comfortable tinkering with  any file on my computer or with security software.  So I will just wait for this bug to get fixied since it is a beta after all.

thanks everyone for your help and your suggestions as always.

Mine was an over the top. Download "full" installer then installed. No problems.
I never download/install through the GUI. Downloading through the GUI has brought
me nothing but headaches.

As mentioned above sometimes multiple reboots work.
Other times a repair works.
If all else fails a clean install is necessary.

So I would just like to say to everyone who helped me thanks everyone for your time and your help
