Where is WebShield.ini located?

I also have a memory usage problem.

Depends on your OS.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AVAST Software\Avast\WebShield.ini XP location
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\WebShield.ini Vista, win7 or later - this ProgramData location may be hidden.

You should only use notepad to edit this and you should run notepad.exe as administrator in win7 or higher.

Thank you DavidR.

I've added the lines to WebShield.ini. There seems to be a minor change: The memory usage in idle used to be 40 MB, and now it's around 30 MB.

In version 2008 the usage was around 2 MB. I downgraded from 2011 to 2008 and now I'm using v2013. Are the figures normal? Should I downgrade again?
And what's the setting "UseStreamFilter=0" supposed to do?

(Win 7 32 bit).

I appreciate your help.

Hi Yaron,
we have removed the code that periodically swapped the allocated memory to disk, since it was terrible for the performance.
I am not sure at the moment if there is or not an option in the ini file that re-enables this working pool trimming again.

We definitely spoke about such option internally, even had some discussion if the name should be:

PreferSlowDiskAccessToFastMemoryReads=1

or:

EnableExtraSwapping=1

however I am not sure how this ended. I might be able to find out tomorrow.
Lukas.

Hi lukor,

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation.
I don't mind the extra 40 MB RAM usage if the performance should be improved. Could you please confirm that 40 MB is normal?
I was concerned that my settings were wrong.

Add the two lines in your WebShield.ini

[General]
UseStreamFilter=0

Yep, this seems to have fixed it, thanks a lot!

You're welcome.

for the amount of memory it uses on my machine, this explanation is fine (I can always do the little trick to shrink it down if I feel the need)! as I was thinking something has been changed/removed since v8 ;D  ... maybe as future improvement an option can be added in the setting to allow the user to select which behaviour has to be used by Avast!

My Reply #16 above should clear that up, see extract of that post.

You should only use notepad to edit this and you should run notepad.exe as administrator in win7 or higher.

You don't say what the error is, nor do you say what your Operating system is ?
Both of these can help us resolve your edit problem and you should only be using notepad.exe for the edit.

Hello,
I've got the same problem. I'm using version 2014.9.0.2021.
After working some time my laptop gets completely slowly.
I've updated the WebShield.ini file setting "UseStreamFilter=0"  but it doesn't work.

Is there anything I can do?
Can I uninstall an install a previous version?

Regards.
Javier

You don't say what operating system you are using ?

I can't remember if avast uses this new streamfilter in Windows XP, if not than switching it off in the webshield.ini is unlikely to have an effect.

Is there any other problem related that may affect performance?

Not that I'm aware of my other system is win7 32bit netbook and although it isn't my main system when browsing I don't see this high cpu activity. That system only has 2GB of RAM (maximum) and a dual core Intel atom CPU and that is no speed freak.
