won't update through avast

I am getting a popup telling me  programs need updating but when I go into avast and try to update them it just sits there.
These are these 2

java run time
flash player plugin

Go to the vendors website then download then install update.
I never use the SU to do the actual updating, I always go to the vendors website.

There is/was a bug in the Software Updater that informed the user there were updates available
when none was needed. Check the version number on your machine with the one on the vendors website before
you download any software.

By the way unless you absolutely need "java run time environment" uninstall it.
JRE is known to be easily exploited.
