Here we go again won't update java runtime???

My avast told me I needed to update java runtime enviroment but when I click it though avast it just sits there like it did the other week with another program it told me to update.

I know I have no virus or spyware.

I went in though programs and features and did an update that way but it is still showing it needs updating through Avast.I am starting to think it is an avast issue.

Did you reboot after installing the jre?

Sidenote: Unless you absolutely need JRE uninstall it. JRE is known to be easily exploited.

I rebooted and it said updated thanks.

Para-Noid thanks for info but it said critical update so how do I know whats really needed and whats not?

If you have Java you need to update but the question is do you need Java ? as Para-Noid said it is easily exploited and a big security issue to have it installed on any system if you don't really need it.

Java should be at version 7 Update 45 .. Adobe Flash should be at version 11.9.900.117
and Adobe Shockwave at version 12.0.4.144 (for all those that use them) ... The issue you
have with Avast not showing or doing the proper update, is one reason I disabled that feature.
I find it easier to just run a check once a month to see if any of the above changed. You can
use the links below to see what version of each you have installed.

Java .................. www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Flash ................. www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/

Shockwave ........ www.adobe.com/shockwave/welcome

JGM, did you uninstall the old version of java? in addition to keeping java up-to-date, you also have to be sure to uninstall the old versions..

it is best to not have java installed, but, if, for some reason, you have to have it installed, you need to keep it up-to-date and you need to uninstall the old versions..

if you can't think of any reason for having "java" installed, you probably don't need it installed..

I have java tm 6 update 15 from 2010 and it won't let me uninstall from programs and feautures I did a couple of others just fine.It is gone from my avast program though.
