Having these things enabled is not the same as having an open port: a firewall will block the port anyway. Having an up to date OS removes the risk of attack even if a port is open, but disabling these things removes any risk of a worm getting through a firewall and exploiting an as yet unknown security risk.
It think its safe to shut them down unless you are on a network. As I known absolutely zip about networks, I can't even say that for sure.
Anyway, as long as you had a firewall and up to date OS, you weren't at any risk. At least I hope not, because I was in the same boat. I tried this thing today, and it doesn't seem to have caused any problems.
